Teacher found out? - June 20th 2010, 03:30 AM

Has anyone else ever been found out by a teacher for an eating disorder. If so what did u do or they do? I almost ended up fainting and my teacher called my mom. How did your teacher find out from a friend, your appearance exc. ?
Did they continuously check on you throughout the year.

It sounds like it could be a good thing that your teacher called your mom, even though it might not seem like it; maybe now your mom will be aware of what's happening, and she'll help you to get better. Also, while it could be hard to have your teacher know, it also might be helpful for the same reason--it's always nice, and important, to have someone be there when you're struggling or having a hard time.

Having support is crucial, so this could be a blessing in disguise!

It's never happened to me but from a Health and Safety POV your school is legally obliged to look after you hence your teacher called your mom

One of the counselors at school found out about mine. He guessed, I'm not sure how though. Anyway, it's not a bad thing that they called your mum, and it can be really helpful to have an adult you trust that you can be honest with about it.Hang in there.

My friends went and told a teacher, and she left it for a bit but then rang my mum and then came and talked to me about it. I was extremely embarased but it wasn't so bad as she is a nice teacher. But she did tell all my other teachers just so they know, and I am fine with that. So yea, all my teachers know. My friends found out because I never ate lunch any more and my weight loss became quite obvious.

Actually, my school counslor found out that I have an eating disorder..
It wasn't pretty.
I mean... he found out by observing me at lunch when I didn't eat, and the way I acted around people who were eating by me.

At first he just spoke to me about it and asked questions, but then he made it get more serious to the point where I would have to eat lunch in his office everyday and I wasn't permitted to go to the bathroom after lunch until the end of the day unless I had a female teacher with me. It wasn't good for me.
But I guess he was just trying to help me...

Re: Teacher found out? - July 6th 2010, 12:06 PM

Hey there.

I definatly think school telling your mum can be seen as positive!

I have a teacher who ive been close with for the past year. Shes helped me through alot. Theres always been 'talk' that ive had an ED, but i always denied it. A few months back i was chatting with my teacher in her office. I admitted i have issues and that i often purge. She was completly just there for me and explained she knew how i felt because she used to have issues with her weight when she was my age.

Due to my parents splitting up, that i hadnt had contact with my dad for months and that my mum was in hospital from a suicide attempt, she didnt tell anyone apart from the head of upper school. She asked me to tell my councillor but said she wouldn leave it down to me. Which i did tell.

My councillor asked for me to be with a teacher at lunch who could make sure i'd eat, but its just not possible because fact is, they cant make you.

Just stay strong. PM me if you need me.

Jess
