Question Siblings with Eating Disorders? - September 21st 2010, 11:18 PM

Okay, so like 5 years ago or so, my oldest sister was diagnosed with bulimia and anorexia. She was a junior in highschool at the time, I forget how old I was but I think in elementary school. She got treatment and went off to college. She transfered colleges back to one where we live currently, and now she has to live with us due to family reasons. Anyways, so all this time we've thought she was over it. But we've noticed many signs, here are some:

- I personally think she looks really skinny
- She eats a whole bunch of food but is so skinny?
- Before she lived here, she'd stop by eat a bunch then 'have to run an errand' (aka. throw it up?)
- We saw throw up in our alley (gross!)
- one time we went to her appt. and saw throw up in the toilet left over along with a weight scale next to it
- she has a weight scale in her room
- she is pretty insecure already w/ boyfriends (she always has to have a guy to be her bf)
- my dad said he found throw up in his sink one time when she stayed at his house to babysit his dog

We were going to confront her about it, but my dad did before we could with my mom and so she avoided us for a long time (last easter). So she knows we have an idea.

What do y'all think? Do you agree it seems as though she has an eating disorder (bulimia)? If so, what should I do? What can I say? Thanks!

I totally agree with you. It does sound like she is struggling again. It could be that she never did recover, and is just having a bad time now...or it could be that she had recovered and is developing again. Either way, it does sound like she has an eating disorder and you really should confront her about it. Get her help asap. When confronting her, sound caring and understanding rather than in her face. Also, dont make eating meals a big deal. Don't watch her like a hawk when she eats. Who knows, she may be able to sort this herself this time, she may need treatment again. Just don't leave it too long.
