Can't seem to find the will to eat? - July 13th 2011, 07:06 PM

I am not sure this is actually a disorder (yet) but I find myself often being hungry, but then feeling full after only a few bites, while I know I obviously haven't eaten enough to provide the energy I need for the day, I simply get real sick if I try to eat when I'm (feeling) full. I assume bouts of depression have affected my hunger but even when I'm happy I often tend to find it hard to eat.

I have no issue with my weight, I'm actually the perfect weight for my height/age according to my doctor. I have been resorting to eating whatever I can when I do feel hungry, and drinking meal replacement shakes once or twice a day, when I can't seem to muster up the hunger to eat properly. I know this is probably not the best thing to do, but it's better than not getting the stuff I need out of my meals. Also since I started drinking the shakes (as opposed to only eating when I'm hungry) I have been feeling MUCH better and healthier ().

But, I want to get out of this habit, and can't seem to figure out how. Any ideas?

One last tidbit, I tried eating just a little a few times a day, but I feel outright sick at the thought of eating for large parts of the day (just not hungry :S) so if anyone was going to suggest that, it doesn't seem to work for this particular problem.

Self pity will not rescue you.
Sometimes we have to save our own lives,
not because no one else cares, but because no one else can.

Life for you has been less than kind
So take a number, stand in line
We've all been sorry, we've all been hurt
But how we survive is what makes us who we are.

Dreamed up the maps, give me the charcoal and the paper
We invent paths they cannot see, and they're too scared to walk

Only after disaster can we be resurrected. It's only after you've lost everything that you are free to do anything.

I was like that for many years. I was never diagnosed with anything besides depression and that's what they blamed it on.

I'm not sure if it's an eating disorder, mental issue, or a physical one, but I just kind of went through the motions. When I lost a ton of weight and was almost hospitalized, I began to eat one fairly decent meal in mid-evening.

It got my weight up enough to stay healthy and it was like that for another year or so. Now I can't keep my hands off of food. :P

One suggestion would be to try to COOK the food. Sometimes the constant smell of something will make you want it more. If that makes you want it less, try not to look or smell the food you eat. Just plug your nose and eat it.

Works for me when I know I need to eat, but feel sick if I try. It may just be the "smell" of food. Best of luck.

I wouldn't say this is a typical eating disorder. But it could be a number of other things that are worth looking into. It could very well be depression or even anxiety. I would consider seeing a doctor to see what they could do for you, and to see what possibly could be going on. For now, or until then, I would eat foods that are easy on the stomach. Some of which are- soup, crackers, fruits, veggiesm etc. Don't eat things with a lot of fat, grease and sugar. Also, drink plenty of water.

I bet it has something to do with your depression, since many times changes in eating habits are signs of depression. I'm not sure if it's an eating disorder, but it may be, and I would talk to a doctor.
Stay strong, PM me if you ever need!
