Dying to be thin - September 1st 2011, 12:45 PM

Heres the story... I am rather fat.. and so i decided to do something about it, and stopped eating so much, and started exercising HEAPS, some days i wouldnt eat at all, I kept a food diary so i knew what i had eaten every day and could see where i should cut down, I made myself throw up pretty much everday, and sometimes more than once a day.

I lost a lot of weight, but i still look fat, so im now making myself throw up and not eating much.

Does this sound like an eating disorder? I know you cant diagnose me but i know what im doing is wrong but its the only thing that seems to work..

Im dying to be thin, I want to weigh (edited)gs, then i will be happier...

People say that what people with an eating disorder see in the mirror is different to what others see, is this true? Could i be seeing myself as fatter than i am.. Probably not.. I am rather fat...

Hey there,

As you already know, I can't diagnose you with anything. However, you know yourself that your behaviours are wrong, and if you can't stop them by yourself then you need some help to do so. I would recommend talking to a parent or a school counselor or another trusted adult to see if you can get yourself some help. Help can be in the form of someone to talk to, other forms of therapy, diet plans and things like that. It sounds like you would really benefit from a diet plan from the doctor, and reassurance that you're weight is fine (or help to reach a healthy weight.)

Eating disorders are really hard to deal with, once you are sucked into their cycle it can be very difficult to get out again, so well done for reaching out for help.

If you need to talk more about anything you can always PM me.

Re: Dying to be thin - September 1st 2011, 02:02 PM

Hi there! [this is going to be boring and long, but try to bear with me. I'm trying to help you! ]

I'll go from below to above. Yes, it is true. People with eating disorders do not see what others see. Their mind is so focused on them being "fat" that they don't realize how skinny they really are.

Now weight, has to depend on how old you are and how tall you are. As long as your weight is proportionate to your height and your age, then you needn't worry at all.

This does sound like an eating disorder. I obviously can't tell you that it IS one, for obvious reasons. But I can tell you, this sounds very much like bulemia. It is called the binge and purge cycle. Eating, then puking out whatever you ate, regretting your decision to eat.

Now coming to helping you with this. I really wonder why you're "dying" to be thin. I really wouldn't suggest that you put your life in danger just to be thin. There are so many misconceptions in this world about "being thin" and "size [Edited]" and how that's what makes a woman "attractive". An attractive woman is a healthy woman, and a woman who is comfortable and happy with who she is.

Yes, I do understand that you want to lose weight. I've been there before. Too gain results, you should have a thorough knmowledge about how the body functions. Just exercising and not feeding the body (thereby depriving it of the energy it needs to burn the fat), you are only hurting yourself and it will be worthless. You won't realize it, but once you feel you've lost that weight because of that exercise, you will gain twice as much in a matter of a month if you don't feed your body right. At the time that you eat, your body will end up storing all the food that it is fed, simply because it cannot predict when the next meal will come. This storage of food is in the adipose of fat tissues. So this adds to body fat. Now, if you continue to starve yourself, your body will have no energy to use to sustain your body. This is going to lead to digestion of muscle. In simple but disgusting words - your body will eat you from inside out. It will start feeding on muscle tissue. It is very very unhealthy if that happens. One of the signs of that is very dark urine. So please watch out.

Now since you know the basics, I'm going to try to achieve what you want to, except let's modify it a little. What you really want to LOSE FAT, NOT WEIGHT. Weight is important. You need to maintain body weight to be healthy. Yes, exercise is very essential in helping tone and sculpt the body and burn excess fat. Your body does need fat. Especially a woman's body. It helps give them extra energry, when they need it. What you don't want is EXCESS fat.

Now this is what I want you to try:
Start your day off early. Wake up by around 6 am. Within half an hour of your waking up, brush your teeth, use the loo, and get something to eat. Maybe a fruit or a veggie, like a carrot? After that, take a short walk, maybe 10 mins? Then in about 2 hours, have breakfast. Now these timings can be flexed according to your school/college timings, or whatever it is. Essentially, what we are planning on doing is eating apporximately 6 small meals in a day and backing it up with exercise.
About 2-3 hours after breakfast, have a small meal again. Here, you may munch on some peanuts, or have a sandwich, have some cheese. Something nutritious. Yes, cheese is very nutritious and very healthy and essential for you. 2 hours after that, have your lunch. And yes, 2-3 hours after that, another small snack. This again can be fruits, or a salad. 2 hours after, have your dinner. Don't watch TV or sit at the computer after dinner. Go to sleep early. Lastest by 10 pm, you have to be asleep.

Now here are some precautions you should take:
- NEVER skip any of the meals.
- You want to eat appoximately however much you can fit if your two hands if you cup them together, because that is the actual size of the stomach.
- You have to finish dinner by 8.30-9.00 pm maximum.
- Do not have juices. Instead try EATING the fruits. It's healthier. Try to eat them whole, and not cut. That way the nutrients won't oxidize and it will actually nourish your body.

The reason I'm telling you to eat really early and stop eating when it's late is because the body's metabolism is greater in the morning that at night. That is, the digestive system works best in the morning and slows down at night. So, in the morning, the body utilizes all the energy from the food without storing it as fat. But that's exactly what your body does at night. It stores fat. After 9 pm, your digestive system won't digest all the food and eliminate it. It will store most if it as fat. Now you probably understand why I said that.

Now coming to foods like juices, cakes, candy, biscuits and such - don't eat them.
these kind of foods you will eat only after you exercise, and you may have only a piece or two maximum. They give you instant energy, which was lost when you were exercising.

Coming to the actual exercising - do what you love. If you love dancing, turn on the music, and dance, but not just shaking your booty and head. No. Maybe try learning dances like Salsa or Samba. They help giving your entire body exercise. You can swim if you like. You can job, you can cycle, you can go for a run. Whatever pleases you. You can even do yoga. Set aside time for your exercise. You need to exercise for a minimum of 3 hours per week. Yes, it may not sound like much, bit when you start, you'll realize it's pretty tough. Maybe half an hour of exercise for 6 days, with one day of rest in between, wherever you want it. That's your choice.

Just one last thing before you get all bored going through this - drink lots of water. When you pee, your pee should always be clear/transparent, like water. If it isn't, it means you need more water. So make sure your body gets the water it needs. And listen to your stomach. Eat slowly. Chew your food. Your stomach will tell you when it has had enough to eat. You need to be tuned in to hear that message.

Now the key to really looking good is first accepting the way you look right now. Only when you accept and love yourself for the way you are can you do anything to change it at all. And most important - Try to be happy with you are!

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to ask. You can PM/VM me anytime. Try this out and let me now about a month later if it's working or not.

Re: Dying to be thin - September 7th 2011, 10:52 PM

This post raised some questions myself. i always thought of an ED as starving yourself or forcing yourself to puke... I thought the desire to be thin just took over and it was an automatic eating disorder. I knew there was a mental part, but i just figured that was all part of the not eating part. So what exactly is an eating disorder? I'd love to hear that...

But I'm worried about you. This, in my eyes, is an eating disorder. But I guess my eyes are wrong. Have you tried simply dieting? your doctor can come up with a healthy, smart plan for you. Hang in there. PM me any time.

Hi Leah, an eating disorder, is a group of conditions defined by abnormal eating habits whether it's an intake of too much or too little food which is caused or can cause a lot of impairment to physical and mental growth.

Hope you feel better Slowly_Dying.
