COMFORT EATING - January 17th 2012, 07:39 PM

i can't stop! Ive put a lot of weight on in the past year or so and even though im not obese, i am classed as over weight which is depressing My friends constantly tell me not to worry about it , they don't see that the extra bit of baggage really gets me down.

I can only see myself going down hill, i've tried dieting but i just can't stop comfort eating whenever i can!

suggestions?
If you need me to expand then i will....just say!

Try doing other things rather then resorting to that. Maybe a sports activity, reading, writing, singing, etc.

I comfort eat too. It's gotten really bad but I've found that certain things help me to stop before I even start. Such as going online, exercising, drawing, coloring, texting a friend, playing a video game, doing chores, etc. I think you get my point. Just distract yourself. It's easier said than done but it gets better with practice.

I have the exact same problem as you I am sorry that I have no advice since if I did then I wouldn't have this problem but just wanted to let you know you aren't the only one.

Hey there,

Everybody comfort eats to an extent, it depends on the extent in which you are doing it. If you are eating a very large amount of food, to the point of you feeling sick, this could be considered a binge, and it is very dangerous. It can cause unhealthy weight gain, repturing your stomach, a LOAD of many dangers.

A while ago, we made a thread for coping mechanisms for eating disorders, in which users wrote ways to be able to cope with different things, including binging. You can use these sort of strategies to be able to stop a binge, and be able to get through without eating too much. I would also recommend you start pre-packaging snacks, and don't allow yourself to eat more than a serving. If you are going to eat chips, put them in a bowl rather than taking the bag with you. I would also recommend to start exrecising. It is a great way to relieve stress without harming your body, and can burn off any excess calories you eat! Comfort eating is okay if you don't do it to often.

Take care! And don't be mad at yourself, it happens to the best of us! Just breathe, and let the bad times pass.

Re: COMFORT EATING - January 18th 2012, 11:24 AM

Hey there!
As Traci said, we all do comfort eating to an extent. I do it too. It really can be comforting at times. Its a place where we can find happiness at times when we are distressed.
I'll suggest that don't eat while sitting in front of a TV or a computer and all in such situations, because you tend to concentrate more on the TV and your brain does not register that you are eating and that the stomach is full now which makes you go on and on and eat a lot. Also, if there is any specific food lying around the house that you tend to eat then maybe you can try telling someone to hide it in places where you cannot hide it and only give it to you in small servings.
But at the same time, don't forget that it is important to express your feelings as well. Not having that food available when you need it for comfort can magnify your feelings. It is important to let them out as keeping them inside will end up damaging you. Look for methods which help you release the emotions. Try writing maybe, talk to someone. You can always come here and make a thread or talk to someone in chat.
You can find some ways to express your emotions in this thread too. You may have to go through trial and error to find a method that helps you let out your emotions in the best way-

Its easier said that done BUT most of the great things wouldn't have ever been done if they hadn't been said first.

I have a knack for getting addicted to things... what I most frequently do to get my mind off a craving, is exercise. It also helps me sleep in the evening.

If you've got some spare time, read this:

But don't if you're easily triggered. If you're not easily triggered then go ahead.
