Depression - May 4th 2012, 12:40 PM

I do not know if this is the right forum to post this in, but I was wondering/asking if depression is genetic. I have had a couple of my family members( these family members were dead before I was even born) that had depression and some of them even committed suicide. So, my main question is if depression is genetic and can/could be passed down from person to person.

Depression is genetic. But, it does not mean that if your father has depression, then you WILL get depression as well.

But yes, there is a chance you can get depression from genetics. Keep in mind, sometimes depression is just caused by events in your life, or seasonal events (winter + little sun = seasonal depression in some people).

There is no way to test for genetic depression. Usually it is only if you feel depressed for no reason. No family issues, no major friend issues, no physical ailments, etc.
