IBS - Irritable Bowel Syndrome - June 2nd 2012, 07:58 AM

I know this isn't a very nice topic, but I just wanted to see if anyone has actually been diagnosed with it?

I've had a bad stomach since Monday and by a bad stomach I mean diarrohea and later on this week feeling constipated. My mums a doctor ( but doesn't deal with this sort of health - she deals with learning difficulties) and she says that I might have IBS because of stress. I am very stressed at the moment and have a lot going on in my life (stress at school, self harm, depression, eating disorder etc etc) and my stomach really doesn't seem to be getting any better.

I'm going to try and go the doctors over half term, but it's just so horrible.

Any replies appreciated.

Well, IBS isn't something you can be diagnosed with immediately. You have to have it for at least 2-3 months before most doctors would consider diagnosing/testing.

And usually you only have it once a week for two months or three times a month. Though, if you have Chronic IBS it can happen more often.

You may just have an upset stomach due to stress. IBS is often triggered or made worse by coffee, carbonated drinks, alcohol. Those can cause constipation.

These can cause diarrhea: Too much fiber. Food and drinks with chocolate, alcohol, caffeine, fructose, or the sugar substitute sorbitol, large meals, fried or fatty foods, and spicy foods.

So try to avoid those if you can. I got most of my information from knowing a friend who has IBS, but the specific foods I got from webmd.com and medicinenet.com
