Smoking.. - January 11th 2009, 03:45 PM

Is anyone else a smoker, only cigarrettes though! No drugs.
Anyone want to help me give up, I smoke about 10 a day, I used to smoke more, but I dont have the cash to pay for my habit.

Now I want to stop, I believe the nicotine is playing an important part to my mental health.

Re: Smoking.. - January 11th 2009, 03:53 PM

I consider myself a social smoker. I hardly ever smoke at home or alone. Nor do I consider myself addicted and I've been smoking for about 2 years. I could be wrong.

If you're really determined to quit, nothing should stop you. However, you shouldn't quit cold turkey. That will just make it harder. Try cutting down to 5 a day, then 2 then one every other day and then none. I think that method would be easiest but whatever works for you.

Good luck

I agree with Jade. Quitting cold turkey is very hard to do. Try cutting back and maybe replacing smokes with other small things. Like, gum? I used to chew sun flower seeds too. They helped a lot. Just pick something that will be available to you when you need a smoke and try cutting back slowly. Also, keep motivated. Maybe you can read a few articles on the bads of smoking, whenever you feel a need to have one.

I quit for a while, I was on patches, Is that recommendable to try again? I still had cravings though.

Re: Smoking.. - January 11th 2009, 04:10 PM

Smoking is very bad for your health.

If you want some of the things it does to you read on i'll list them! (helps me revise anyway!)

Smoking is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases due to these reasons:

Red blood cells carry their oxygen in Haemoglobin. However when you smoke the oxygen is replaced by Carbon monoxide from the smoke. This reduces the ammount of oxygen your body will receive. As a result the heart has to pump faster to ensure enough oxygen is sent around the body. This means blood pressure is raised, increased blood pressure increases the risk of Atherosclerosis, I will go onto explain what this is later, as plaque can can form more readily on the lining of the Arteries.

Nicotone in smoke stimulates the production of the hormone adreniline (this is why you get a head rush, if you have not smoked for a while). Areniline causes an increase in heart rate (again) and also causes the arteries and arterioles (small arteries) to constrict, this again raises blood pressure.

The other chemicals inside cigarettes such as tar have been found to damage the endothelium layer of the arteries. Which leads to atherosclerosis.

Smoking has also been found to reduce HDL cholesterol. HDL is often seen as "good" cholesterol due to it takes LDL cholesterol out of the blood stream and back to the liver to be reproccessed. (High/Low-density lipoproteins).

Anyway as for Atherosclerosis well, its litral name means "Hardening of the arteries".

Basicly when the endothelium layer is damaged by means of chemicals from smoking or high blood pressure it creates a chain of events.

Once it is damaged there is an imnflammatory response. White blood cells leave the blood vessel and move to the damaged aterywall. These cells build up and form a deposit called an Atheroma.

After this calcium salts and fibres can also build up the damaged artery wall. This results in a hard swelling called a plaque on the inner wall of the artery. It hardens and as a result it limits the flow of blood.

This then increases your blood pressure even further, and the increase in blood pressure means more arterial walls are at risk and also plaque forms easier due to an increase in pressure.

This leads to postive feedback building up.

There are risks such as blood clots then, and for example if you were to get one in your leg. One of two things can happen, Gangrene or the swelling of an artery.

Wow its been a while since I did these topics!

As for advice on how to quit, well ring up the NHS. They have a smokers guide line which can offer free nicotine patches, inhalers etc etc. All things that can help you quit. They will also probably send you information confirming exactly what I just wrote!

It's a very very bad habbit! =)

Good luck!

Like everyone has said, try cutting back rather than quitting cold turkey. Also I have heard a lot of people have found the nicotine gum better than the patches (although I wouldn't know from personal experience) Try and get someone to act as a support system for you and when you feel you need a cigarette, call them. It is a lot easier to give up something when you have someone to support you.

I believe the patch and gum can be used together (the gum may help more on cravings). That is a good way to quit. Also make sure you have a lot of social supports in place. People you could call if your having a bad day and feel like you really need a cig. Ideally these people don't smoke or wont smoke around you.

Gradual steps are often best to take, take your time and know going in that it will take a long time to quit.

However I congratulate you on deciding to quit. It is an excellent step to a more healthy you!

I'm a smoker. I'm sure if you go to the doctors, they can give you special pills to help you quit. I got told that they make you sick when you smoke, hence stopping you from smoking. My friend said it's a form of conditioning, like what they do with alcoholics.

Who do you carry that torch for, my young man?

Or do you carry it around just to burn things down?

so let's strap ourselves up to this engine now

I'm not a smoker, but I do know that it is hard to quit. I've watched my dad struggle for years. Some people say go cold turkey, and some say gradually cut back. I say, do what works for you. Try snacking on sunflower seeds or chewing gum. The patch can work and there are also pills you can take but you need a prescription from your doctor.

You might want to check out THIS website on quitting.

Re: Smoking.. - January 13th 2009, 10:32 PM

I should be trying to quit... I normally don't smoke too much though.

It's really hard to quit, as everyone has said, and I'm not going to say it's bad for you because A) You know that and B) Others have already said it. How long have you thought about quitting, and how committed are you to it? You really have to be ready, so find ways to ready yourself.

Big thing, is to make sure one bad habit doesn't replace another. That's a big thing I know me and a few friends have had problems with.

Talk to your doctor, really. They can help SO much. They are constantly coming out with new ways to quit smoking. I know the anti-depressant I'm looking at is supposed to reduce cravings too. Your doctor can tell you what your best plan of action is. Plus, smoking 10 a day is quite a few, like half a pack. That's not really easy to over come by yourself- though you can for sure!

Good luck!
Maria.
