So tired but can't sleep - September 30th 2012, 06:04 PM

I'm always really tired during the day, when my alarms goes off I find it very hard to get up, because I just haven't had enough sleep yet. I'd happily sleep for hours more. I get about 6/7 hours sleep on a good night, but it always takes me at least 1 hour/1 hour & 1/2 to fall asleep once in bed. The earlier I go to bed just means the more time I lie in bed doing nothing. I've tried a few methods of sleeping faster, drinking/eating certain things, and I've even tried listening to relaxation tapes etc. but nothing seems to work. I just feel so drained of energy during the day, but once it gets to the night I can't swtich off Any suggestions?

I have the same problem, its because my mind wont "shut up" hahaha. What I use is melatonin. Its a natural sleep aid and it works wonders. It takes a while to get used to it so you'll feel like you have a hangover the next day. But it is so worth it, and my psychiatrist even recommended that I use it, so I know its not bad.

Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt.

Always? Always.

Here are three simple tips:
-turn off your computer at least 2 hours before bed
-exercise, but not right before bed
-don't eat after 6 or 7pm, and drink coffee after noon

I've tried Melatonin, but I found it didn't work (perhaps because I didn't stick with it, I only tried it a few times). I ended up having worse nights sleep than usual, so I was put off :S

Hmm yes I probably break all of those to be honest, I know I shouldn't. I will try to do that, thank you for the advice

Nobody follows those. It seems like they'd rather rely on melatonin tablets. Sure, they're fine to take, but why not address things that are contributing to the problem first, right?

Try reading a few chapters of a law book just before you go to bed.

Seriously. It works for me!
(but, or certainly for me, it must be a boom about English Law!)

When I was taking melatonin to sleep, because I was told by my doctor to, they said it doesn't work immediately. It's something you have to stick with every night to see the effect sometimes.

I've been on it too, and when I was in hospital there were many others who didn't find it very helpful. I always took it at least an hour before I went to sleep.

When I moved out here, they told me that it shouldn't be taken before max. 15 minutes before you go to bed. There's another girl out here, who does that, and it works fine for her.

I'm on another medication for schizophrenia, and it makes me horrible tired.

Oh, and after you've taked the melatonin, don't do anything. Just go out, brush your teeth and turn the light off. No computer/tv. Then it actually makes it harder to work.

Take care. x
