Question Depression and Tiredness ? :/ - November 10th 2012, 04:24 AM

I have depression, and alot of the time experience insomnia. Although I have tried going to sleep earlier & later than my normal time. It doesn't make a difference.

I usually have short outbursts of energy in the morning ( hyperactivity) but I get drowsy, tired and depressed towards the middle-end of the day.
Is there any way to gain more longer lasting energy ?

Try eating apples, apples give you energy. Maybe try energy drinks but don't overwhelm your body with them.

I had/have depression and insomnia and I know how much it sucks.. But, stay strong and keep trying new things to see what works and what doesn't.

P.S. Random piece of info, I live in Australia to

Hey up.

I struggle with my mental health and I've had problems with my sleeping for years and I can relate to how it feels to not be able to sleep. I think in the long term, you really need to be focusing on your routine and the things you do during the day, and especially in the evening which could be affecting your sleeping pattern. You say you struggle with depression and a lot of people who do, find that once they start to tackle the depression and begin to overcome it, there sleeping kind of falls into place along with it. Do you have any support from any mental health professionals for treatment for your depression?

Reducing your stress levels should help too - if you feel stressed! try to do some meditation or relaxation before going to bed to help you relax. Stay away from work at night because overloading your brain with information and stress from work isn't going to help. Try to avoid complicated films and books or songs with deep lyrics which might cause any stress.

I think it might be a good idea to see your doctor too. This way they can do some tests just to make sure there is no underlying physical condition which could be a cause to the insomnia. I'm not saying you have a physical illness but things like Anaemia, Diabetes etc can cause problems with sleep. Are you on any medication? Sometimes certain medications can cause insomnia.

I think it'd be good for you to try and be active during the day. Maybe go for a half hour walk each afternoon. Drink plenty of water too to make sure you don't become dehydrated. Try and eat properly too. Eating regularly will help keep your energy levels up and I've read before that ensuing you have a good magnesium intake will help too. Eating whole grain food is known to help boost energy levels too.

Energy drinks and caffeine (tablets and coffee etc) can help but it's not something I would advise. I used to drink a few energy drinks before school and I would be hypo and alert for a few hours and then my mood would crash completely and I'd fall asleep at school in the afternoon. Making changes to your routine, diet etc is definitely the best way to try and overcome insomnia.

Hope this helps!
