Endless UTI :( - December 15th 2012, 03:38 PM

I'm totally at my wit's end right now.

For the last like 4months i've had a severe uti that WILL NOT go away.
I have good hygiene so it's not that.

I've been to the doctors 3 times, each time been put on anti-biotics. Whilst on them it starts clearing up... but the day i finish the course it's back.

I'm literally at my wits end. It's driving me mad.

Any ideas what the hell is going on?

You really need to go back to the doctor's or the ER, UTI's can lead to Kidney infections and eventually lead to the heart if not treated properly. Tell them everything you just told us. If they don't put you on something stronger, refuse it and find a better doctor. You should be urinating every 3-4 hours and drinking about 4 bottles/glasses or water, daily. Try cranberry pills, as well. Reduce coffee/caffeine.

Are you sexually active? If you are and you are prone to UTIs you need to be cleaning yourself after every time you have sex immediately after you have sex, by using the bathroom and taking a shower. Don't wait until a few hours later or even 30 minutes after. You may just be really susceptible and keep extra clean. Also, if you wear thongs switch to regular cotton panties. Thongs can increase chances of contracting a UTI.

You could also just drink unsweetened cranberry juice. It's a good way to help some UTIs clear up, but usually won't help once you have one. It can't hurt however! As for the caffeine, it doesn't cause a UTI, it just irritates your urinary tract when you have one. Avoiding it during treatment will help the treatment be more effective.

Drink LOTS of water.

Honestly, it may be all you need is a stronger antibiotic. There isn't much else a doctor can do for a UTI, to be honest. The only other thing is that they can give you antibiotics for a longer period of time, however that isn't always a sure thing. If you have a severe enough UTI, they may suggest intravenously giving you antibiotics in a hospital for a day or two, then send you home with pills for the rest of treatment. This way it gets into your body quick and fast and has less chance of being diluted by, perhaps, your body overworking and not allowing the pills to take as much effect.

Good luck! I feel your pain. I had a UTI that was around for months until my doctor gave me a shot once daily for a week (antibiotic). Haven't had that issue since!
