Lung Cancer - August 12th 2013, 08:57 PM

This thread has been labeled as triggering by the original poster or by a Moderator. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

My grandmother has been smoking for about forty years now. She has really bad circulation in her legs and therefore she walks sideways. Her arteries are clogged and this will eventually give her a stroke. Her lungs are too weak for any kind of surgery. My grandmother is very tiny and fragile. The doctors are pretty sure she has lung cancer, she just needs a few more tests. If she has it, we're going to let her live whatever she has left instead of fighting the side effects of chemo. I guess I was just wondering how long. How long is it going to be until one of the most important people to me dies.

I'm so tired of cancer. My grandmother had a brain tumor, my step grandmother had cancer in the nose. My great grandfather and cousin both passed away from lung cancer. My friend growing up had Leukemia. I just don't understand why it has to come and take lives and effect people like this. This isn't fair.

Hi Cassie

I'm really sorry to hear this. My grandmother passed away a year and a half ago from lung cancer so I understand how you feel right now. However, you said the doctors only think she has it right now so there's still some hope that they might be mistaken.

As for how long it could take it really depends. The doctors will probably be able to give an estimate once they've finished their tests and they find out how far along the cancer might be. Just try to spend as much time as possible with her and make sure that you'll have good memories to remember her by.

If you ever need to talk or rant then feel free to PM me, take care.

I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother. It's really sad. It seems as though anything can cause cancer now a days.

I really do hope they're mistaken. But smoking for forty years, doesn't that do a lot of damage? And that would explain all of the pain and coughing. I worry a lot. She lives several hours away, but I'll definitely go see her as soon as I can. I'm just afraid I'm going to call her one day and she'll be gone. Thank you for your response. I'll keep you posted.

Hey Cassie, I'm so sorry to hear about your grandmother. I hope she doesn't have it There's no way for us to know how long she will have, the doctors will be able to give you an estimate if she does have it, but even they could be wrong. Smoking for any amount of time does a lot of damage, including causing cancer. My grandpa lost his larynx to cancer, but was then able to live another 33 years and my grandma had emphysema, both have passed away now, neither from smoking-related illnesses, but they did suffer because of them.

Also, considering the number of your relatives who have had cancer it might be something you need to think about for yourself in the future because family history is a risk factor for you.

Re: Lung Cancer - August 14th 2013, 05:16 PM

I've thought about family history a lot. When I think about it, most of it was caused from smoking, drinking, or inhaling certain chemicals at specific jobs. My great grandfather worked with laundry and inhaled fumes. My grandmother, who is still alive, worked at a hospital with a lot of medicines and blood tests. The causes are kind of my own theory, you know?

I'm sorry to hear about your grandparents. Cancer really robs people of the full ability to live life. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for replying

Re: Lung Cancer - August 14th 2013, 10:59 PM

I'm really sorry to hear about this Cassie. I had an aunt that died of lung cancer last summer. It was really hard to get through.
The best advice I can give is to remember the reasons you love your grandma, cherish those moments and if you need to cry, cry, if you need to write out your emotions, write them out.
As has been said before, we cannot tell you approximately how long she will have left to live however the doctors will be abel to let you know.
I know this is hard to get through and I'm here for you if you need someone to talk to. You can send me a PM any time and I will help or just listen, whatever you need to help you through this.
I know things for you are very complicated and overwhelming right now and this is just adding to everything, however, you have strength Cassie, you may not see it but many of us here do. You have determination and you have resilience.
You will get through this.
We are all here for you.

Is lung cancer common? I heard it was one of the deadliest. I never had to envision my life without her before. She's just always been there and I'm going to be absolutely heart broken. Thank you! You're a good listener.

Hey Cassie. I'm so sorry to hear about your grandmother, and I really hope the tests go well and she doesn't have cancer. As you know, I'm very familiar with the way cancer tears apart lives and affects people, and I completely understand how you're feeling. If you need someone to talk to, I'm always here.

Thanks, Hailey! That reminds me, your PM is somewhere in my hurricane of them I've got to go through my inbox. I hope your brother is well! =)

There's a chance now that they're going to take off her feet.
