Chest pain and nightmares - January 5th 2014, 02:52 PM

I feel slight pain under my chest when I'm depressed. I'm sad and depressed most of the time so the pain rarely ever stops. It's not an emotional pain, it is very physical. It feels like a knife cutting through my heart.
I also feel it during my dreams where it can be very intense. I have nightmares almost every night. They are not classic nightmares where I'm chased or scared. These are the nightmares where I'm in a very uncomfortable situation or where I suffer.
I also have difficulties falling asleep (takes me about 2 hours each night)

Should I be worried about this? And is depression the reason? It has caused me many problems already and I want it to stop!
Help, please?

Hi Stanislav,

I'm sorry you're experiencing these chest pains and nightmares. Not being able to sleep well can really take a toll on your well being.

First off, are you clinically depressed? If you're on medication for clinical depression, have you checked the list of side effects? The nightmares and chest pain could be a result of your medication if you're on any.

I am diagnosed with anxiety, which is known to cause intense chest pain and frequent nightmares. You could be suffering from severe anxiety. Is there anything that's stressing you out at the moment?
If so, before you go to bed and/or when you get chest pain, take long, deep breaths. Doing so should make you feel relaxed and you'll fall asleep easier and quicker.
Also, whenever I have chest pain, I find that drinking something hot such as tea, coffee, or hot chocolate is soothing and makes the chest pain subside.

As for the nightmares, deep breathing until you fall asleep works well for me. You could also read a novel until you fall asleep. I personally like to watch movies before I fall asleep, usually a Disney movie (it brings me back to my childhood and makes me feel relaxed).

I hope I've helped you in some way.
If you ever wanna talk, feel free to PM me.
Good luck!

I love you to the moon and back.

I've never been diagnosed by a therapist, but it's obvious that I have severe depression problems.
I also have lots of problems in life which may be the reason.
If something nice would happen to me in this hell of a life, maybe I wouldn't be thinking of death all the time.
And my nightmares are not that big problem. They're not nightmares, but dreams where I emotionally suffer. I call them nightmares because I always wake up in tears!
Good thing is that I'm on holidays so I can have a little rest.

Yeah, enjoy the holidays while they last. Rest as much as possible!
Is there someone you trust that you could tell your problems to? Like a friend, sibling, teacher, coach, or another trusted adult?
I'm always here if you'd like to talk. Just send me a PM anytime!

What this sounds like to me is the side affects of anxiety and stress. Those with severe enough depression often suffer real physical pain brought on by intense emotional pain (mind over matter). And nightmares whether they be frightening or emotionally jarring are often brought on by high levels of stress, it's your subconsciousness way of trying to sort out what you are feeling (I know, it sucks the way our minds find to torture us). You should speak with a doctor to be sure there isn't some underlying medical condition causing these things, and if it turns out to be physiological you can ask for referrals to a psychologist or psychiatrist who could help. Best of luck

Thank you for your kindness
I will try what you said (in case my parents allow)

No problem If you are really worried what your parents will say if you try and ask for help just bring up the chest pain first, let your parents know that there is real physical pain. This way you can be sure there is no medical condition and you can bring up to your doctor that you have been feeling depressed and have them talk to your parents. I know my parents where never really open to me getting therapy, but it's much more convincing coming from a medical professional and not just an "overemotional teenager" (as my parents put it )

A lot of people with anxiety will come in with chest pain however they will be physically fine. There's nothing wrong with getting it checked out however tell the doctor about your concerns of depression too.

It could be anxiety, I'm not sure. I have lots of problems and issues right now and it could be anything.
But I'm sure it's either depression or anxiety.
