What are your best cold remedies? - October 13th 2016, 07:28 PM

It's getting to the time of year when everyone has the cold. I'm developing one right now, as it happens.
Which got me thinking. Everyone has their own ways of coping with it. Some people load up on cold & flu pills and battle on through, some people take a week off work and then emphasise their symptoms to justify it. (I deal with absences at work, I'm a touch cynical).

For me, I tend to drink lots of cranberry juice, try and have some soup or a curry to clear my sinuses, and I carry some loo roll with me to save on packets of tissues. If it's really bad I will also marinate lightly sprinkle my pillow with Olbus Oil or put some in a hot bath.

What are your best methods for tackling a cold?

Throw those curtains wide
One day like this a year would see me right

Soup and cold pills?

Tea bags on the bridge of the nose can help with congestion.

Some people claim extra vitamin C will fully prevent a cold.

I usually load up on maximum strength cold medicine (DayQuil/NyQuil in gelcap form) to use during the worst bits. Otherwise I stick to my heated eye mask, lotion tissues, essential oil diffuser, and humidifier. Most helpful is the eye mask that you heat in the microwave and it melts all that snot and congestion away. It also helps with the headaches that can accompany colds, too. As for essential oils I like to use lemon, tea tree, ginger, and/or peppermint to particularly help with it. Mostly just opens my sinuses a little and wakes me up.

Ultimately, I almost always use some over the counter cold medicine at some point during the cold. I'm not sure what kind you have over there in Scotland, but there's probably something similar.

And the best advice I have? Binge watch some Miranda while in a duvet-cocoon.

“There is nothing beautiful about the wreckage of a human being.
There is nothing pretty about damage, about pain, about heartache.
What is beautiful is their strength, their resilience, their fortitude
as they display an ocean of courage when they pick through the
wreckage of their life to build something beautiful brand new,
against every odd that is stacked against them.” — Nikita Gill

Actifed and just battle through it May use vitamin C or soothers for a sore throat. If my sinuses are bad, I love to rest my face on a hot water bottle. Also, I love the smell of Olbus Oil too

For a stuffy nose I can't breathe out of or blow, afrin nose spray is a lifesaver. I usually only use it at night. You aren't supposed to use it more than 3 days because you can get a rebound stuffy nose but I usually don't have that problem until I use it constantly for at least a week.

What my family and I tend to use are:

Echinacea if I feel something coming on. I also use it if I'm stressed, traveling or anything that increases my risk of getting sick by being introduced to new germs (like back to school) for two weeks.

Hot drinks: lemon water/lemon water with cinnamon/nettle, alfalfa, red raspberry and peppermint tea (sometimes add yarrow as well).

As bad as it sounds, when I first start feeling like I'm getting a cold, I will chew a clove of garlic a few times a day. It does actually work and the taste is awful but it helps me personally a lot. I have to do it pretty quickly after I feel the very start of a cold like the itch in my throat or such.

Apple cider vinegar (I use Braggs) with water when I first start feeling sick, every hour/couple hours.

Essential oil steams to help with a stuffy nose. I personally use tea tree oil and eucalyptus oils, sometimes separate sometimes together. Also hot showers help. I also have a sinupulse which works amazing as well if I don't have time to steam or steam isn't quite cutting it.

Not a huge fan of OTC cold medicines and don't really use them unless it's absolutely necessary. I've used neocitran a few times which is alright or buckleys.

Nasal spray used to be my lifesaver, but I always ended up at a point where I couldn't stop using it, so now I load up on (good) cold medicine Kleenex and toilet paper and muddle through. It's the congestion that kills me. If not for that, it wouldn't be so bad.

It depends how I'm feeling overall and how much distress it's causing me.

Typically I drink a lot of water or fluids. I make teas and put honey in it or lemon. Sometimes I'll make a plain ginger root, honey, lemon tea. I've taken a spoonful of honey and swallowed it, helps to soothe the throat.

Sometimes I take medication to cope if I can't. Sometimes I take it and pass out. I sleep a lot when I'm sick and not well. Stay in bed with movies or TV shows, a fan on me, with a window open maybe. Then having tissues and fluids near me.

I sometimes take a hot shower and just stand under the water and breathe the steam in. I always find it helps.

Also, taking a walk outside for a bit. Fresh air can be helpful.

I've used the netti pot before. Helps to clear things out if your really clogged up or swollen.

I am also guilty of indulging in ice-cream

If I do or don't have a stomachache I usually have ginger slices (I have them regularly), garlic hits (crushed garlic, balamic oil, olive oil and mix it in a bowel. Pita bread and heat it, then dip it and get the chucks of garlic) which I've found to really help speed things up, or having fennel.

Sometimes ive resorted to icing my body like behind my neck cause im so hot and my face is on fire.

That's what I do sometimes, I resort to those things.

I will usually buy sinus relief and drink honey and lemon by the bucket load I've had my third cold virus this winter

Handwashing, tylenol, ibuprofen, and a decongestant.

People swear by vitamin C but want to know what really, really helps me? An ER nurse who has to deal with the flu frequently? A freaking mask, flu shot, and hand washing. I wear a mask. When I don't wear a mask, I'll get sick because some kid will usually cough in my face.

Only one year (I think it was 2014) I may have caught the flu. Influenza A was poorly paired with the vaccine so everyone had influenza A. I worked in a peds ER and I probably caught the flu. I remember laying on the couch Christmas and listening to myself wheeze. I remember thinking that I didn't sound that good but I wasn't in too much pain or anything. I think I had a more milder case of flu than most people because I didn't have body aches.

Get the flu shot.

Oranges. Seriously, gimme them all! Also olbus oil on tissues on pillows etc. (not that other stuff though because my mother used to rub it all over me when I was ill as a child and i just remember go to bed all sticky and horrible ) and soup is always good. Also if I get a bad throat or cough, wilko's seel some really cheap syrup stuff and it is so good for making it better. I live of that stuff when I am ill. And hot baths with my head under to take away headaches or having my head over a bowl of boiling hot water with a towel over just clears me up. You could put some olbus oil in but I never do!

Liking this thread btw.
