Shaving against the grain - April 8th 2017, 04:23 AM

Hey,
So today I shaved against the grain for the first time. It was a close shave, but google says that it is really bad to do.
Does anyone have any advice on this?
Thanks

The only reason I know of that makes shaving against the grain "bad" is that it usually brings on more of a risk for worse razor burn/ingrown hairs when it starts growing back. However, shaving against the grain seems to work the best in removing the most hair. So I've been shaving against the grain regularly for I don't even know how long lol, and the regrowth and everything gets a lot more bearable once you learn how to work with it.
There are things you can do to lessen the razor burn and ingrown hairs and possibly not even get any at all. For example, I always wait until the very end of my showers to shave, so that my skin is warm and more flexible I guess? And also so that the steam opens up the pores and just makes everything run a lot more smoothly.
Also, using conditioner instead of shaving cream or soap usually helps a lot, again making everything smoother and easier. Also, when drying, don't rub it dry and instead pat it dry so it irritates the skin less.

I've also heard exfoliating before and after shaving helps a TON. Oh and also, use a single bladed razor, and try to avoid doing multiple strokes over a single patch of skin.

I always shave against the grain. I know they always say not to. Someday maybe I'll learn the hard way why they say that. I think it may cause ingrown hairs, but I've never had a problem with that, at least not yet!

(I'm sure someday they'll engrave it on my tombstone: "He shaved against the grain and now he's dead.")

Thanks for your responses.
Thing is, now I have zits that have popped up randomly after shaving. Are they related?

yeah, that's the razor burn/ingrown hairs i was talking about. also, when you shave in general, but especially against the grain, it opens up the pores more and leaves more room for dirt and bacteria to go and boom - genital acne. that's why you should exfoliate the area especially after shaving, to get rid of the dead skin cells and hopefully lessen the risk for pimples and zits popping up down there.
