almost choked to death & embarassed myself :/ - July 11th 2017, 05:06 PM

So i take anxiety pills everyday and i just took one a few minutes ago. i choked on it out of nowhere and it was so embarrassing. like literally i was flailing my arms around wildly, my eyes were wide and drool & vomit was all over the place. it was mortifying. this isn't the first time i had a choking episode in front of my family (i have a habit of swallowing stuff too fast & not chewing properly. its ridiculous). anyways me and my brothers were over at my aunt and uncles house and my aunt and uncle & my brothers saw the entire thing. it was so embarassing. i really wasn't trying to be overdramatic, i ACTUALLY thought i was gonna die -- i couldnt breathe for a few seconds -- but one of my brothers mumbled something about me being overdramatic. this isnt the first time i've had a choking episode so i think they're fed up w me. im so mortified i vomited in front of everyone all over the kitchen

i wish i hadnt been so wild like that with my gestures and facial expressions but i thought i was dying

Choking is definitely a scary thing- I doubt that you were being over dramatic!

Taking pills can be uncomfortable, especially when we are so used to chewing and then swallowing. To swallow something without chewing can feel weird, and we can tense up which can lead to choking.

Depending on the type of pills and the instructions, if you are allowed, you could take them with yoghurt or start eating something first, pop in the pill and swallow. Otherwise, try to stay calm and take the pill with a sip of water to help it go down easier. Some medications can also come in liquid form, but not all.

It can also be tempting to rush food in general. Perhaps you can try to slow down and think about the texture of the food and the taste to help you slow down a bit.

Either way, you can't help how you react when you are choking, and I'm sure you weren't being overdramatic!

Thank you very much.

I have actually been taking various pills for a number of mental illnesses during the past year and a half, so I am quite accustomed to swallowing pills.

The thing is, I was on my phone so I kinda lazily popped one of the pills in my mouth when I was supposed to that evening (the medication was on the couch but I did not have a glass of water nearby). I just kept sucking on the pill in my mouth until I was done using my phone and could get a drink of water to swallow the medicine.

However, after about a minute or two, the top-coat-shiny-layer thingy that is generally on many types of pills completely melted, and I was left choking on the powder inside the pill. I take Fluoxetine by the way -- also known as Prozac -- ... apparently that stuffs known to make your throat burn like a someones holding a torch up there if the top layer melts. I did not know this before until after the choking incident, which explains why I had a severe burning pain in my mouth for hours afterwards.

So yeah, long story short, I made a very stupid decision since I have been taking pills for a while and should be used to it by now...

It wasn't a stupid decision. Especially since you didn't know this would happen. I have done similar things myself!

Most capsules have that coating so that the medication is released at the right time rather than instantly melting away when it enters your mouth/throat. And as you have found out, the coating makes it easier to swallow than a mouthful of not very nice powder!
