Weird Feeling - January 6th 2018, 05:04 AM

Hey lovely people <3

Over the past couple months I have noticed that when I'm walking towards the parking garage after my shift (usually around 11 pm) I start thinking about someone being up there, hiding around a corner going to jump out at me and do something to me.

When I think about this I automatically become numb, my feet are numb, my head spins (almost a faint feeling). I don't know what's going on.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what this could be?

I have no answer for this but perhaps get a good looker of a doctor to escort you to the car? You could always carry pepper spray with you.

I work a lot of evenings, so I really dislike bugging security to drive me. I only bug them if I'm working until 12 or so. Pepper spray is illegal here in Canada

I don't have a medical diagnosis (obviously), but it could be the stress/anxiety of the thoughts causing you to feel numb etc. IIt would be best to ask a doctor
I get not wanting to ask security, so perhaps ask a friend? Alternatively, you could look into some self defense classes if that would help.
Also, there is a chance you can get some form of a security item. Like a taser or something; IDK the laws in Canada.

I don't know about your past or whether you've ever had to interact with creepy people in that parking garage but I can relate entirely to the numb feeling. I work at a grocery store usually until midnight, and there have been several times when I've been collecting carts or just walking to my car and scary, creepy looking people have come up to me, shouted at me, or threatened me. Experiencing these moments combined with trauma from the past gives me that same eerie feeling like anyone could come at me at any moment and it almost feels like a panic attack coming on.

Upon doing some research it seems like Canada doesn't allow any self-defense "weapons". Someone on another forum suggested getting a tactical flashlight that has a strobe function, so you can at least momentarily "blind" any perpetrators. I get that doesn't seem like much help, but getting a hefty flashlight might make you feel safer even if you just use it for hitting someone who attacks you.

I talked to my counselor about this issue and she said that it's a lot less likely for some random stranger in public to come up and assault you than it is for someone you know to assault you. Just look at how many sexual assault and physical abuse victims know their abuser. That knowledge helped me a bit.
She also told me to make sure to maintain eye contact with the people I see. Usually I would look down at my feet to try and avoid them and not push them to assault me by getting their attention. But what that does is make you look weak. She said if you make eye contact with those people, it's a way of telling them "I see you" so they know they can't sneak up on you to do anything.

Sorry, I know this isn't much help simply because it didn't help me all that much either. There's still that fear, whether irrational or not, of someone being there to attack us, and it sucks that it's something we have to deal with.
If I had to guess what this could be psychologically, I'd say it's probably just a heightened feeling of fear, stress, and anxiety. For me it often does feel like a panic attack is developing and my chest with tighten and I will definitely freak out.

It might help keep your mind preoccupied, while also helping you feel safer, if you plan on what to do if someone does jump out. Like as you're walking to the parking garage, think about what you would do if someone is behind a certain structure or car.
I honestly don't know, but I do hope you can find a way to cope with this feeling. Stay safe!!

I have similar things happen and I feel like the reason I have this happen is due to my PTSD. I struggle a lot with walking in public especially at night. If I am with someone it helps but I still don't like doing it. I used to walk to school and it was only a fifteen minute walk. I would have these feelings all the time and there were times when it would cause panic.

I tried discussing this with a therapist but they were not too much help. I can say that one of the things that worked for me is having something I felt I could use to protect myself. I never used a weapon but I would have my car keys and hold them a certain way. I knew, realistically, this might not do much but it did ease my concerns. It might be something to consider trying. Just find something to bring with you that makes you feel safe. I don't know what that will be though and like I said it doesn't (probably shouldn't) be a weapon of any kind.

I am not saying that your issue is caused by PTSD. I just know that is what has led to mine and so it might help for you to seek out a counselor to try and figure out what might be causing yours.
