Itchy skin - January 30th 2018, 06:23 AM

I have been having this problem for months now. At night (not every night) I will randomly get extremely itchy for no apparent reason. My head will feel itchy then my back then my arms then my legs and it just goes on like that for anywhere from half an hour to 2 or 3 hours and I have been losing a lot of sleep over it. I have no idea what is causing it. Sometimes I think it starts from me thinking about something that specifically makes me feel itchy (like imagining a bug crawling on me or the tag on the back of my shirt or my hair) I start obsessively scratching and get more itchy and I just can't seem to stop. Could this be a symptom of something or am I just losing my mind. Does anyone else have this problem or know what it is? I feel like I'm just imagining feeling itchy I don't even know if that makes sense. I'm so tired all the time lately from this making it so hard to sleep. Typing this at 2am because of this.

Hey,
So this happens to me a lot and I have realized that when I have high anxiety I get really itch and can't seem to stop. I sometimes get itchy when I am bored, also when I am stressed. By reading this post I also got itchy. So I don't think you are crazy.

I would suggest trying to figure out what exactly you feel right before you start to get itchy. Could you be stressed about school work, worried about stuff you have to get done, anxious of the next day? I think once you figure out what you are feeling you might be able to understand this more.

I would suggest in the meantime to maybe take an oatmeal bath at night to try and to ease the itchiness. You could try and put lotion on or aloevera lotion to calm your skin. Maybe do this every night even if you aren't itchy. That way you can get in the habit and it may stop it from happening.

I will hope this helped.

Your Friend,
Frankie<3

Hey there,

My suggestion would be that you talk to a doctor to rule out any physical issues. If there is no medical reason as to why you are having this occur that it is very likely that it has more to do with stress, anxiety etc. When I am overly anxious or stressed I will sometimes start itching. A few years ago I started itching and I figured it was just from stress but the issue got worse and I had to seek treatment. A doctor might be able to ask questions specific to the issue to figure out if there is any medical cause. The doctor might also be able to run an allergy test to determine if it is allergies. I know getting in with a doctor isn't fun but it's always best to rule out any medical conditions to be safe.

Best regards.

We can't diagnose but skin itching could be caused by allergies, skin problems and even mental health issues.

It's definitely best to talk with your doctor about this. It can also help to think about what might've caused the itching to start... for example, think about what (if any) changes have been made in the last few months such as changing detergent, or soap, any changes in your room, anything that you might be applying to your skin or eating, or even your stress levels. If you feel that it could also be triggered by you thinking of it, you may want to find ways of distracting yourself. Doing this can help to find a cause, and if not, at least you can let your doctor know. If you are scratching a lot, you may want to buy some cotton clothes so that if you have to scratch, you'll be doing less damage to your skin.

Hope you can get some sleep and feel less itchy soon!

Thank you all for your replies, I feel relieved that it seems like a more common thing then I originally thought. I've set up an appointment so here's hoping I can get it figured out.

It may be due to some allergies. Better you consult a skin specialist.
