Giving Blood? O_O - March 3rd 2010, 06:45 PM

To start off with it wasn't my original plan.

But the school is doing a blood drive, and my other friend was worried about doing it.
So we both agreed not to.
Then later we talked about it and thought "Why not?"

My original thing for not doing it was:
A few years ago when I had a mono blood work test.
They drew a small vile of blood.
They said oh it will take a few seconds.
Yeah...it took a few minutes.
My blood drips soooooooooooooo slow!
Then...
I thought I was going to pass out.
I started to sweat and got light headed.
IT WAS A VILE!

But then I thought oh its a few years ago.
I will be laying down.
Maybe they just did the vein wrong etc.

So someone just tell me what im doing will be worth it. =P
And I won't pass out >_<

My grandad has given blood many times before, but had to stop because of light-headedness afterwards. I'd say if this has happened before, you have to be very cautious before proceeding with another extraction. Speak to the nurse before-hand, say what has happened before. They may say you can't do it, but that's a professional's opinion, and probably more wise than my amateur medical instinct

It will be worth it!!
I'm the same, my blood goes slowww, every blood test I have, they have to wait ages for it. And I hate the sweaty faint feeling too!
But in the end, you will be fine after like ten minutes (so I've heard from friends) and you may have just saved someones life.
I'm going for the first time this month too!! I'm nervous but glad I'm doing it!!

It also helps if you eat beforehand. Having a little sugar boost will lessen the light-headedness. If you have friends around then that's also a good thing because you guys can keep each other company and distracted about what's going on.

As Magic said, knowing that you're saving a life is definitely worth it!

Hey there,
I would say that if you have felt dizzy from giving a small vile, it might not be such a good idea to try to donate blood. They use a much larger needle and keep it in for a much longer amount of time to get more blood. I would ask someone when you go to donate if they think it would be a good idea. If you both decide you might pass out, then they would be totally fine with letting you go. Maybe you could try in a few years or so. =]

Re: Giving Blood? O_O - March 4th 2010, 02:22 AM

Giving blood is sooooo worth it. I have given 2 times before.
The first time I was dizzy and almost passed out. The second I was finneee.
Make sure you eatttt. Eat a big breakfast. Have some protein and carbs. Also something with iron if your iron is usually low. The nurses will test you and make sure its high enough. Sugar helps too. Drink a lot of water. But not tooo much so you have to pee during it. Its so not fun. Drinking water helps the blood flow. It almost makes it go faster. The nurses have you do hand exercises to pump the blood from your body into the bag if its going slow. But eat and drink, its more important than you think.
Being nevous is also a big factor. The first time I was so excited but scared and I think thats why I got dizzy. Try to stay calm and just relax. It really does help.
If you feel like you are going to pass out, the nurses are there to help. They usually will not stop if the needle is in taking blood but they will make you feel more comfortable and talk to you so you dont pass out. Afterwards they have tables of snacks. Make sure you eat and drink again. It usually takes a few minutes to feel good again. You will be a little tired, but thats normal. Also, if you smoke, dont. Dont smoke for the day after you give blood. It makes you dizzy and almost gives you a high feeling.
Anymore questions, PM me. But it is soo worth it and not as scary or bad as some people make it sound. But if you do not feel 100% comfortable, donttttt do it.
Good luckkk.
