Just wondering -
March 11th 2010, 12:28 PM
I dunno if this is the exact forum for this but since it deals with puberty I guess so.
I've been wondering for awhile where baldness comes from. I'm not going bald or anything, I'm 17 and have a full head of hair but however my dad started balding around my age. His dad has suffered hair loss as well. However I've heard the gene that depends on that comes from the mother's side (heard it from a hair stylist and a biologist) which in this case, my mom's dad has all of his hair and since my mom has no siblings, I look at my grandma's siblings who all had hair and even her dad did. So is it true that the baldness gene comes from the mother? Also, I keep thinking maybe my forehead is too high or something but I doubt it. I'm probably just concerned about nothing. How should I get my mind off of this. |

If you are talking about male pattern baldness, which I'm pretty sure you are, it does come from the X chromosome (so your mother). Look at her father and other male siblings, if they have a full head of hair chances are your mother is not carrying the gene therefore it wouldn't be passed down to you. You can also check your mothers hair pattern. In females pattern baldness is expressed differently, if she has it her part (the section down the middle) will gradually start getting larger.
This happens because you are a guy. Therefore in order for you to be male, your father needs to pass you the Y chromosome which rarely carries genetic disorders. You get an X chromosome from your mother and lots of things likes this are carried on the X chromosome. Even if your mom is a carrier, you have a 1/2 chance of getting the X chromosome that has this gene. It's rather complicated but I'm sure you get the point. |

Ye the gene for male-pattern baldness comes from your mother's side, I regret not knowing anyone from that side of my family, I have no idea if i'm gonna go bald!
Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment...

Hmm okay, thanks again though.
Though, how do I get this whole thing off my mind? It's been bugging me for a while but I just need to get it off my mind. Any tricks? |
