Question Can anyone answer this question? - March 20th 2010, 02:45 AM

Do you need parents permission if you are a minor (if you know how to drive and you set up a doctor's appointment) if the doctor put you on anti-depressant pills?
I need to know this because I want to get well from my bipolar and I'm planning to set it up (when I'm 16) because my mom won't take me.
Also, if this isn't the right place to put it, I guess in Mental Health ?

While you walk away with the frosting of my heart
So I'm taking back what's mine, you'll miss
The slice of heaven that I gave to you last night

Who diagnosed you with bipolar? A doctor wouldn't put you on only antidepressants if you had bipolar, and if did it would only be in a situation they felt you needed them.
To answer you're actual question though, if you're above the age of 16 you can do anything medically without your parents even having to know.

^I don't think that applies to all parts of the United States

But, I may be wrong

I think it's 16 in most of Canada, the USA, and the UK.
Google it for your area to be sure though? It's just generally a safe answer.

Some places vary on the age requirement but if you were diagnosed by a doctor, I'm a bit confused why you weren't on meds before and are getting a prescription now. Doesn't make sense to me.

Hi there Mary,

I was put on anti-depressants when I was 17 and my psychiatrist asked if my parents would attend the appointment, mostly because there is a risk of minors having negative side effects when being put on anti-depressants (such as increased suicidal thoughts) and so it's best to have someone around who is aware of what's going on and to try and keep you safe.
I think that if you're in a state where you have been diagnosed with bipolar and you require psychiatric medication, I think that it's best that you do go and talk to your doctor whether or not your mother will attend.

Take care.
