Question How to stop snoring? - April 8th 2010, 06:02 AM

I love my boyfriend to death but his snoring drives me nutty.

I have heard if he sleeps on his stomach he won't snore, however I can not keep him on his stomach all night.
don't want to have to make him wear some sort of nose thing to keep him from snoring.
Any cheap suggestions or home remedies?

No really way to stop it. Ear plugs are my recommendation.

It might be the position he sleeps in, like you mentioned. Tell him to change sleeping positions, and see if that helps. Elevating the head of the bed might help, too. It depends what the cause of his snoring is, but limiting alcohol and/or medications might help him too. He could always keep a sleep diary too. That would include information like what time you went to bed, what you ate that day, how much you exercised, how you felt, what naps you took, and medications you took, etc. That way you could switch things up everyday until the snoring lessened or stopped. Here's a website that might help: http://www.helpguide.org/life/snoring.htm

Never thought about that
But now he is getting to where he is snoring even on his stomach.
I have to wake him up just to get to sleep.

you can get breathe easy nose strips, you put them over the top of his nose, and it somehow helps to stop snoring, also with my dad he snores alot more if he has eaten food with chilli in it or has had alot of beer (which is everynight that he has had alot of beer). try the breathe easy nose strips, they work for my sisters friend.

Does he have any allergies or respiratory problems? That might be the cause and by solving those problems, it might help? I have asthma and occasionally I snore at night because of it (according to my boyfriend). Luckily for him (and me), it's only occasionally and he thinks my snoring is cute.

But if you don't want him to wear anything on his nose, it's unlikely that you can get him to stop completely with just home remedies. As Charles said, earplugs are your best bet.

this probably sounds crazy, but someone told me once that if you go to sleep with your tongue on the roof of your mouth, you won't snore.

A bit drastic but my Dad had his tonsils removed to stop him snoring. It did work 100%.

Re: How to stop snoring? - April 11th 2010, 05:52 AM

Snoring is caused by a narrowing of the wind pipe between the epiglottis and the beginning of the nasal chamber. Pressure builds up and causes vibrations aka the snore sound.

Depending on if the nasal passage is also narrow, the sleep right strips may help.
By removing the tonsils, you enlarge the airway and see the reduction in snoring.
The tongue thing is a myth.
