Always thirsty - April 8th 2010, 06:38 PM

Lately I always seem to be thirsty and I can’t go without a drink for an half an hour or an hour because then my throat and my mouth get all dry. I don’t drink soda, only water and some juice, and I drink it a lot everyday. I also tend to wake up in the middle of the night a couple of times and I just crave something to drink everywhere I go I always bring a drink with me, I don’t know if it’s normal to drink like a lot in one day, and never be satisfied.
Another thing I might add, I don’t go to doctors. The closest I’ve been to a doctor is my dentist.

Eating foods high in sugar and sodium could cause this. If you've had diarrhea it could be dehydrating you. Its also a sign of diabetes (which I doubt that's what it would be). Could b a million things really. Maybe you are just a thirsty person.

you're electrolytes may be imbalanced or in a very worse case scenario, it could be a tumor on the pituitary gland. Try to drink gatorade or pedialyte which is balanced in electrolytes as drinking pure water all day will flush your system of those creating an imbalance in the system.

Have you been eating food with more salt?

I've noticed my partner drinks more when he has salty food.

NHS Direct online might give you a better indication as to why your thirstyier than usaul if you can't/don't want to see a doctor.

Is the weather changing fairly frequently where you live? Is it dry there? I find when the seasons change that my throat gets dry pretty quickly and I drink a lot more than I usually do.

And what have you been drinking? Some drinks really just make you more thirsty - like milk and fruit juices. Water is the way to go if you're trying to quench your thirst so to speak. But if it continues, you can always visit your doctor.

Hmm.. it could be diabetes. When I was diagnosed I started to drink a whole lot and urinate a whole lot. I'd go to a doctor and get checked out..

Hey there Andrea,

I agree with what others have said previously - this could be because of several different things. It could be increasing temperature now it's getting towards summer, if you've been exerting yourself more or it could be an illness, such as diabetes.
It's good that you're drinking water and juice rather than fizzy drinks - it's essential that you do try and drink a lot of water to keep yourself hydrated. However, I do think that if you are suffering a lot from this and it's persisting then you should try and visit a doctor, even if you say you don't go to the doctors. If there is the possibility of you having an illness like diabetes, you really do need to get checked out.

Take care.

Re: Always thirsty - April 13th 2010, 03:30 AM

Where I live we have the same weather all year round
So I don't think that's it. It bugs me because I have to take water bottles everywhere I go and they are heavy and if I don't have one handy and I'm far from home or water I have to go buy one. I just feel like I drink a lot and never get satisfied.

Re: Always thirsty - April 15th 2010, 02:57 AM

r.e. all the diabetes posts: excessive thirst is a sign of diabetes, but it's usually accompanied by other symptoms, including: frequent urination, fatigue, weight loss, sweating, etc. without any of those symptoms being present, it's probably not diabetes.

also, in my experience, high blood sugar makes me crave sugary foods and drinks, which is really counterproductive . the op doesn't seem to be experiencing this.
