Insulin Pumps, etc. - April 20th 2010, 02:18 AM

Any diabetics out there using one? I've been on an Animas 2020 for a few years now and love it, though I think my A1C's have actually gone up since I started.

I'm thinking about switching brands in a year when my warranty expires. Does anyone have experience with the Medtronic pumps, Omnipod, etc?

This is probably a stretch for this forum, but any CGMS users? I think a continuous monitor would help me a ton in regulating my blood sugars after meals.

Hey,

I do not have Type One Diabetes. However, a child who is very close to me does. I try my best to stay informed about the topic, so I hope I can help. =] He's been on the Animas for about two years now, and it's been working out really well for him. What kind of insulin are you using? Maybe that has something to do with it?

I have heard from a lot of parents of children with diabetes that having a CGMS is a great asset. However, it can be very difficult to get your insurance to cover this. It's worth a shot to give them a call and ask, though. You could even try getting a note from your endocrinologist saying that it is medically necessary...if your A1C'S have been higher, this would not be stretching the truth.

Definitely speak to your CDE or endo about changing pumps/insulin.

Take care.

I'm on novolog right now, but I'll probably ask my endo if I can try humalog or apidra next time I see her. I've been using a ridiculous amount of insulin these last few months, 55-65 units per day compared to 30-35 last semester. Granted, I'm eating a little more, but my sugars still run high post-meal even though I bolus using the same ratio I used to. I always have to add "supplementary" insulin about an hour post-meal.

I use a medtronic and a CGMS; have been for 7-ish years? My friend is on the OmniPod and I'm looking to switching to it. Feel free to PM me.
