Exclamation Birth Control and Antibiotics - May 13th 2010, 02:06 AM

Okay, so on April 22nd I had my 4 wisdom teeth removed and I was prescribed an antibiotic to take 3 times a day for a week. My doctor told me that it would interfere with my birth control (Tri-Cyclen Lo) but to keep taking it regardless.

I have been taking it regularly everyday but today I had unprotected sex and my boyfriend came inside me. I immediately went to the bathroom to clean myself but I know there is still a chance that some remained inside.

My first pack of the Tri-Cyclen Lo ends next wednesday and so I know I am not protected right now, but I was wondering if someone could help me find out what my chances were that I could be ovulating, get pregnant, etc.

Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

If you were on antibiotics the chances greatly increase and if you are on your "first pack" of the birth control, literally the chances are even greater as birth control pills usually take 3 or so packs to really get into your system. I don't think it's possible for us to pinpoint exact chances of pregnancy or any of that, so the best thing you can do right now is wait. Pay extra attention to whether or not you get your period, but try not to stress too much as that can cause you to miss a period as well. If you miss a period or in a few weeks you are still anxious and concerned take a pregnancy test and go from there.

Hey Cassie, it’s only been a few days you have to give people a time to respond. Not to mention, seeing as this is something only a medical professional can help you with, sometimes people don’t know what to say.

Antibiotics do decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills. So the fact that you had sex without any other form of protection means you have a higher risk of getting pregnant. Just because you clean yourself off and/or out afterwards does not reduce the chances of getting pregnant. The only thing you can do now is wait to take a pregnancy test which you can buy over the counter once it has been at least fourteen days since you have had sex. Or, after five days you can go see your doctor and they can do a blood test. Other than that, its currently out of your hands.

It’s extremely important to listen to your doctor in the future when they say certain medication can alter the effectiveness of your birth control pills and therefore you should probably use condoms as well if you plan on having sex. And if you have any doubt, it’s best just not to have sex until after you are done taking the medication.

Re: Birth Control and Antibiotics - May 16th 2010, 04:02 PM

Well I got my period today which I am assuming means that the antibiotics did not have any effect on my birth control cause it came right on time as per usual.

I normally would have asked my pharmacist but it is my mom who went in to pick them up as I was in no shape to go in myself and ask/pick them up.

Thanks for the help though!

I am super glad everything turned out the way you wanted. But just a quick note, antibiotics are proven to reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills. So its not that the pills weren’t effected its probably the fact that you just must have not been ovulating at that time. So next time you are on antibiotics definitely use a second form of birth control. Just to be on the safe side.

I am going to go ahead and close this as everything has been resolved.
