Help? Losing my hair! - January 7th 2009, 07:59 PM

I'm only 18. And recently I've started to lose my hair? I saw on the health channel that at any given time you should be able to run your fingers through your hair and only pull out one or two pieces of hair. But when I run my fingers through my hair, or wash my hair, or brush my hair, I lose like.. 20 at a time. Is this normal? Any ideas on what could be wrong?

I lose A TON of hair when brushing, washing, etc. But I also have extremely thick hair, so it doesn't make a difference to me. It could be nutritional problems, stress, using too many harmful hair products, etc.

I know that whenever I wash or brush my hair I pull out at least 50, maybe closer to one hundred hairs. I don't know an exact number, I just know it's a lot. My hair is thin sure, but I seem to be doing just fine in the bald factor. I have no random bald patches anywhere, and I lose more than you, so I'd think you're fine.

Hmm...

From what I read online you may want to ask your doctor to check your DHT or DHEA (dihydrotestosterone/Dehydroepiandrosterone) levels.

In men, at least, low levels of DHT causes balding.

I say this because there is a medication called Propecia that has been used in men to treat balding.

BUT BUT BUT

It has also been used to treat balding in women, too, so you may want to talk to your doctor and see if the medication might be of any use.

Additionally, there is a shampoo out there called Nioxxin which supposedly helps remedy thinning hair. It's pricey though.

I'd talk to your doctor before doing anything, just to be safe.

Hope this helps.

There are a few things I can think of that would cause this.
Do you eat properly?
Do you use heat products a lot, such a hairdryers and straighteners?
Have you been unusually stressed or run down recently?

These are things that usually lead to a bigger loss of hair than usual. It's nothing to worry about though really and your doctor won't do anything until you have clumps coming out, or a patch thats finer than the rest.

1. I haven't really been eating properly, no. I work odd hours and am up most of the night so I eat whenever I can and it isn't usually very healthy.
2. I haven't been using a lot of heat products, but I do wear my hear up a lot.
and 3. I have been ridiculously stressed lately over the last month and a half/two months.

Due to your answers to Claire's questions, that does sound like that could be some of the reasons for this.
However, everyone loses between 40 and 120 strands a day, depending on how much hair you have, your age and your hair's growth cycle.

Quote:
People with fine hair tend to have more of it and therefore will lose more of it than their thicker-haired sisters and brothers.
Here are common causes of thinning and hair loss:
1. Seasonality. You'll lose the most hair in the fall -- typically November and December when hair reaches maturity in its growth cycle.

2. Diet. Hair loss can occur through poor dieting. According to dermatologist George Cotsarelis, M.D., director of the University of Pennsylvania Hair and Scalp Clinic, iron deficiency may be the cause. He states in the April 2006 issue of "Ladies Home Journal," it might be worth checking your levels with your doctor and take a supplement if they're low.

3. Aging. Marc Avram, MD, a Manhattan hair transplantation specialist, told Elle Magazine, "As we get older, follicles shrink, producing skinnier, shorter strands; then the follicles start to die off. That rate and the extent of that process is a matter of genetics."

3. Pregnancy Some women experience hair loss with pregnancy or as part of post-pregnancy hormonal changes. Other women experience hair loss when going on or off (usually off) the birth control pill.

4. Illness or intense stress Sometimes hair loss occurs as a result of illness. Stress, excessive weight loss, iron deficiency and thyroid problems can also cause hair loss.

If you're really worried, ask your doctor, however, experts say you really only need to worry if your part is getting wider or you can see your scalp through your hair. For severe cases, you might consult a "trichologist," a physician who specializes in hair loss.
It sounds like it could be normal, but keep an eye on it, and take better care of yourself in the long run as your habits may not only be affecting your hair.

It could be due to your diabetes. My mom has very thin hair, but hers used to be very thick. I'd venture to say your hair is thinning but that you aren't actually losing your hair. That is, it's getting thinner but you aren't about to go bald.

This could either be normal or due to a poor diet and stress, or any hair products. One way to find out is eat healthy, try to reduce stress and no harmful hair products. If it persists, then it may be normal, otherwise if it stops then you know why. Is the hair thinning or becoming frail? If that's the case then possibly diet/stress, as people with eating disorders can have hair thinning, becoming frail and falling out.

It could be malting? I lose a hell of a lot in summer and then in winter. My hair's extremely thick so you can't really tell.

Not eating properly, working lots and being stressed is the worst combination hun. It often affects us in ways we can't help, such as losing hair, bags under eyes and brittle nails etc. There's not much you can do about your hair really then, a doctor will just say sort diet and stress out. They're pretty useless doctors, they always put things down to stress!

One thing I did after I had my baby and lost a lot of hair is use a good volume and strengthening shampoo and conditioner everyday. The volume makes your hair look thicker so the loss is not noticeable and the strengthening makes it just a little bit more resilient to breaking. Hope this helps at all x
