Question UTI - July 8th 2010, 05:59 PM

so kinda embarrassing and kinda gross
i am pretty positive i have a urinary tract infection.
i know i should go to the doctor even though it seems to be a pretty minor one cause i dont want the infection to spread
but i dont want to tell my mom cause im afraid she is gonna assume i had sex or something because usually they are caused by having sex but i didnt have sex. so how should i tell my mom and is she gonna assume its from sex?

I don't think she will assume it is from sex. If she does ask about it, I would just tell her the honest truth that you haven't had sex. In my opinion it is better to tell her and get treatment for it so that it doesn't get worse because it can become a kidney infection, which can be very serious as well if not treated.

UTIs are not caused by sex, despite popular belief. There are other ways infection can get in there, including wiping the wrong way. Gross, I know.

I highly suggest you get it treated, and if your mom assumes its because of sex, I'm sure your doctor will correct her.

The most common causes of UTIs are bacteria from the bowel and usually get to the urethra by improper wiping. There are other causes of the infection too and as you say, you didn't have sex. She probably won't assume that you had sex as a lot of females get urinary tract infections. Most urinary tract infections are caused by E. Coli.

You really should get it checked out. I sound like my boyfriend's mom now, but it could travel to your kidneys and eventually get to your blood stream. A kidney infection is very painful from what I hear. Trust me, I was scolded by an infectious disease nurse and they have to deal with catheter-related UTIs all the time.

Oh, and the risk increases with vaginal sex according to Uptodate.com.
