glasses Vs Contacts. - February 18th 2009, 05:17 PM

To start off: I've got AWFUL vision (i can't go anywhere without my contacts/glasses... i have to wear my contacts in the shower in order to shave my legs otherwise I can't see them!).

About a year and a half or two years ago this guy I REAALLYY liked told me "I'd never date a girl with glasses... I mean EW!"

Yeah, he really wasn't worth it |: lol.

Since then I've ALWAYS worn contacts, apart from travelling and stuff, and I get really self conscious whilst wearing my glasses, generally I refuse to leave my house whilst wearing them.

However, due to a string of contact-related problems my optician has recommended that I take a month or two out of wearing contacts and wear my glasses more often.

I'm actually dreading it, I have no idea what to do...!
I mean my glasses are nice enough, (thick black frames) and I've been told they suit me, but I feel so awkward and insecure whilst wearing them

AHHHHH.

WHAT CAN I DOOOO?!

Personally, I've never really liked contacts.
I only wear glasses. I have contacts and I wear them for events such as weddings or prom or graduation.
If I were you, I'd listen to your Optometrist and do what they say. Don't worry about what other people think of you and just be happy with you. :]

It's only a month or two, try wearing your glasses on alternate days to start off with?
I've never really liked contacts, I found them to be an unnecessary hassle and I personally feel self conscious without my glasses, as ironic as that may sound.
I think you're just going to have to bite the bullet and start wearing your glasses more, i'd rather than healthy eyes than worry about what people are going to think of me for a couple of days until they get used to seeing me in glasses.

Oh girl. Some guys loves glasses on a girl. I've had glasses/contacts since I was probably 13. I have black rim glasses and they look very nice on me since I have blue eyes and black hair. (well not anymore) You probably look very nice as well. I don't think you should worry too much. Don't let the opinion of one guy change you.

And by the way, millions of people out there wear glasses. Do you notice them all?

Think of your glasses as a piece of jewelery. I do.

Contacts on the whole aren't good for your eyes, and if you want to know my reasons, pm me... Dont want to gross anyone out here!

^ They're right, glasses can be like jewelry
You get to pick the exact style of glasses that you like, color and everything. And it's a lot of fun to pick them out... at least it was for me. It might take awhile to get used to them and all that, but they really are useful and aren't so bad after awhile. I'd say try the glasses first and if you really hate them look into getting contacts.

It's better you wear them for two months, than you messing with your eyes and having to wear them for the rst of your life because you can't wear contacts at all.

Don't worry. Glasses are a new fashion accessory, no one notices them and guys who wont go out with someone because they've got glasses, are extremely shallow and like you said, not worth it. Next thing you know, it'll be cause you're wearing red socks with black shoes. Oh the horror

Re: glasses Vs Contacts. - February 18th 2009, 07:13 PM

I have to wear some form of eye correction since I was six, because my eye sight is so bad. I also recently had to take a break from my contacts when I came down with conjunctivitis in my eyes. And while I was self conscious at first in my glasses (which I hadnít worn on a regular basis in about five years) within a few days I got used to them and forgot that they were even there! If it is for your health, I really think you should listen to your doctor and wear them. And if it helps, stay home for a few days until you get used to them. Because there is a difference between vision through contacts and vision through glasses and it can make you a little dizzy if you are not used to it. Then when you are comfortable with them at home, wear them out. I am sure no one is going to point and laugh at you. Believe me.

This isnt really advice about the next two months.
But when you start wearing your contact lenses again, try wearing glasses at the weekends and when your going to be at home or not going anywhere special.
My optician advised me to do that.

Also pick out a nice pair of glasses that are a nice accessory to wear and you will feel more comfortable wearing them.
To be honest I dont know anyone that wouldnt go out with a girl because she had glasses and I never take any notice when other people wear them.

If it's not what you already do, only wear lenses during the day when you're out. When you come back home, put your glasses on.

I get really self-conscious with glasses on too, but sometimes you just have to grit your teeth and get used to it.

I think glasses are awesome, lol. I think they make a girl look sexy smart, and I have never encountered a boy who thinks "ew, glasses!"

To me, contacts are very eye straining and are just another venue for bacterial infection. Plus, I love choosing glasses frames.

I wear glasses. People keep telling me I should try contacts, but I just don't really know. With my luck, I'd probably poke my eyes out.

You shouldn't feel so self-conscious about wearing glasses. Other people understand that you need them to see. If they ask what happened to wearing contacts then just tell them that you doctor told you to give them a break.

rawr. since i've gotten contacts i've worn them almost constantly. and then i broke my glasses ontop of that, lawls.

wearing contacts too much can irritate the surface of your eye in a ring, from then on, the tissue can actually become weak and more irritated the more you continue to wear contacts.

glasses just take some getting used to, i'm sure you'll be ok with them, plus their easier.

you're young enough, and just a hint.. maybe you could consider lasic eye surgery. most insurance companies cover it almost completely now a days. it's painless, and all you have to do is wear sunglasses for the rest of the day after your surgery and put eyedrops in everyday for like.. two months after.
just a suggestion. I'm considering it myself, my vision is rather terrible too, and I think i'd love to just be able to wake up and not have to struggle with contacts.

thank you all for your replies.

Laser eye surgery is like a DREAM.
like i could wake-up and just get out of bed... and y'know... actually SEE the lightswitch rather than bash the wall until i hit the right spot.
I could put makeup on and SEE my eyes whilst doing it without having to worry about nudging my lense out of place... *dreams*

i know right? i just found out my insurance covers the surgery completely. you should check, if you have it (insurance) and even if you don't, the price isn't so high anymore.

I'm absolutely terrified of putting on contacts, my nails are like knives of death. I'd be so afraid of poking my eyes out.

I've been wearing glasses since I was in 7th grade, and I've gotten used to them. I can't really imagine not having them on. They can really make a cool statement sometimes. As others said, they're a new fashion accessory. Even my sister, who has fabulous sight, bought a pair of fake glasses as an accessory. I was kind of like WTF.

But they make a lot of people look smart. I have no idea why. haha

I love my specs. I've been wearing glasses from I was 8, I am now 21 so its what I'm used to....Plus I love all the groovy frames, some people are into shoes, some people are into hair, I'm into glasses!!!

People ask me why I dont wear contact lenses...I just know I'd poke my eye out putting them in. Also I'm prone to rubbing my eyes when I'm tired/upset and I think that'd just cause trouble with contacts!
