I think I've broken my thumb :| - October 8th 2010, 10:15 AM

Last night I slammed it in the car door My sister lives on a street with a small ramp from the road next to her house and several of the others. I got out the car, tried not to fall down the ramp so I shut the door quickly... well, my thumb was there ____

The edge/side of my nail is bruised (it was blue, it's now going purple), the side is a bit swollen and it REALLY hurts when I put pressure on it. The side of my thumb hurts the most.

I can move the joint (it just REALLY hurts) so even if I went to A&E (accident and emergency in the hospital) would they do anything?

If you went to A&E it would get looked at by the triage nurse and she would probably send you for an x ray because of the swelling and colour change. If you say you trapped it in a car door they would most likely x ray it because chances are it is broken.

I have broken 6 bones in total and with my wrists they swelled and turned purple but I could move my wrist slightly and it was broken.

Ach I haven't broken anything since I was about 5 for I can't remember what it feels like I may go to the hospital with my dad today.

Thanks for the reply <3

Sounds like a hairline fracture. I'd go to your local grocery store and get a thumb brace and make sure you ice it! good luck!

I think even if it is broken, you've just got to let is heal for itself. Put some ice on it an let the swelling go down a bit, but if you can't move it properly in a few days, then see a doctor?

Or just go now and make a big fuss in A&E! Always fun

Ew, the bruise on my nail has gone bigger I took two strong pain-killers earlier so it feels better now. It hurts like a bitch when I try and write though

I'm going to the doctors on Monday about my sleeping pills so I'll ask him if he thinks I should have an x-ray and what to do.

Hi, I think I may have the same problem as you, when at school a tennis ball bent back my thumb. It is really swollen and I have great difficulty writing and stuff. I can move it an bend it quite well but when I do I keep feeling a bone kinda crack or something, really weird...It happened on Tuesday and every night since then I kept waking up, maybe due to pain?? I really dont wanna go to hospital and have it xrayed as your probly do more damage havin and xray then letting it heal itself. I've also got a purple bruise on the top of my thumb and its reealllly swollen! P.S, I wouldnt bother with the doctors I'd either go to hospital or just leave it, I'd also recommend putting ice on it to gain more movement and reduce swelling and maybe put a little bandage on it so the finger next to your thumb can support it, sure ull be fine.... Cheers

For both of you, I would advise getting it checked out. Because it might end up healing wrong and you could have a wonky thumb

LOL Thanks, if a wonky thumb is the worst outcome of not getting it checked I dont care too much, I was just worried I'd get arthiritus or some shit like that?? but cheers anyway, ill wait a few days though

Another thing is that if u did go 2 thye hospital theyd make u wait for hours, xray it and put a bit of cotton wool inbetween ur thumb and finger and then wrap round with a plaster, say come bak in 10 days and then look at it agen and say its fine or if it needs more treatment cos i fractured my little finger last year and thts wot they did, apparently if u break it u cant move it... who knows, it cood be bollocks? cheers

My brother broke his thumb in two places last year. The part that connects it to your hand and then up by where he bends it. He had to get a cast for 6 weeks. Definitely go to the doctor.

I hope it's not broke. :/

I think all the doctor would do is take some x-rays and wrap it up.

I hope you feel better though. breaking bones suck!!

Went to the doctors and he said it probably isn't broken. He said since I can move the joint and since I haven't done anything to that even if I had an X-Ray they may not do anything.

He also said it seems to be healing fine
