Lavender helps you sleep? - November 2nd 2010, 10:26 PM

As a lot of you may know I suffer from insomnia. I'm on sleeping tablets I've had prescribed off my GP for now but like he says I shouldn't be on them forever. I'm going to try and wean myself off them soon. My mum has done an aromatherapy course and she always tells me that lavender helps you sleep. I've never actually tried it. Is it true?

I've heard of it. But I don't know for sure. I think I had a kit once which had lavender scents to spray on the pillow, but I never used it. I too have problems sleeping, so I'd want to know if this works! But I don't like the smell of lavender >.>

Do sleeping pills help? I'd be a bit worried to try those. I hate the idea of taking those pills and then losing control of yourself and just dropping off

My brother doesnt sleep, but he takes pills called Melatonin, as he doesnt make it him self. Melatonin is made by our brain, but his doesnt.

Doctors prescribe it for jet lag too...

For what your mum suggested, lavender is meant to help.

Yeah they actually work quite well. He give me ones last year which are better than the ones I'm taking now though but they could be addictive so he only give me a weeks dose. The ones I'm taking now do work fine but I always feel a bit drugged up

Edit:// I'm on Phenergan atm

I wouldn't like the idea of taking 'drugs' like that. It just makes me feel unsettled. So I just struggle with sleeping!

I take melatonin now and then, as it just tells your brain you're tired... its not actually a "sleeping pill".

You can't really become dependant on it either.

Hey there,

Firstly can you please keep this thread on topic.

As for Lavender, there have been a few small medical studies on it, and it is said to help. You can read into it here. However it all depends on you as an individual. There's numerous things you can do to help with your insomnia!

I haven't used it a lot, but the times that I have used it, it's helped me to feel more relaxed. You can get lavendar oil cheap, so it's worth a try.
