*Really* Nervous About Starting Birth Control - December 21st 2010, 03:27 AM

I could use some calming... help? Remind me that starting birth control is totally fine and won't kill me? I've done extensive research... but the doctor told me I'll feel nauseous and awful for a month I'm really REALLY nervous, but I need to stop getting my period every other week....

On a side note, my mother made the most hilarious comment at the doctor's office: "Remember Amy, this is not a pass to pleasure."

HA. It does make me feel a lot better though if I'm ever raped or choose to have sex.

Still-- really nervous. Any stories? Encouraging words? Advice?

Oh my gosh, I remember feeling the exact same way before I started. I was convinced it would be horrible, and I'll be honest, the first week after the pill for about an hour after I took it I felt queezy. But then my mom suggested I take my pill with food and it helped SOOO much. After that it was smooth sailing. Now I know when I'm getting my period, they are lighter and shorter, AND cramps are virtually nonexistent! Don't stress yourself out too much. If you're worried about nausea take it with a lot of water and food and relax, because you could be one of the people who doesn't even have nausea.

And there are so many benefits. You know when you'll get your period, better cramps, better skin, and you're in control.

Hope this helps and best of luck!

Yeah, I felt the same before I started too - I was wondering what the hell it would be doing to my body

However, I've actually had no side effects apart from increasing my mood swings (which are bad anyway). It has made my periods less painfull, lighter, and for me shorter - which is great. It's also really nice knowing exactly what day it will start, and roughly what day it will end

Like you, I also feel happier being on the pill incase I ever do choose to have sex or something like that

If you have any major worries, just talk to your Mum or Doctor about them
I personally have had no issues, and am glad I decided to go on the pill

I'm still alive.
Must have been a miracle
It's been one hell of a ride
Destination still unkown
It's a fact of life: If you make one wrong move with a gun to your head
You better walk the line or you'll be left for dead.

I'm a runaway train on a broken track
I'm the ticker on the bomb that you can't turn back
Thats right.
I got away with it all and I'm still alive.
Let the end of the world come tumbling down.
I'll be the last man standing on the ground
As long as hot blood runs through my veins
I'm still alive.

Hi Amy

Really, birth control is great (most of the time). The side effects you can get when you first start might be a bit awful but after a few weeks they should settle down. I've been on the pill for about 2 years now and it's nice to have an idea of when periods are coming.

The only issue I've had is that I'm currently on the fourth week of me period But I'm starting a different pill soon so hopefully that'll take care of things. It can take a while to find a pill that suits you so if you dislike a pill or one of its side effects then head back to the doctors and they'll be happy to start you on a different brand

Also, if you're forgetful like me you might want to set an alarm to remind yourself to take it

Oooooh setting an alarm sounds like a VERY GOOD idea *programs into phone*

Thanks for the replies you guys, I'm feeling better about it... still a little worried though. I'm supposed to start Sunday if I haven't gotten my period by then.

I've been on birth control for about a year. I was nervous at first because I thought it was going to mess with my hormones. But it turned out absolutely wonderful because it made my flow lighter and less painful, as well as being very predictable. It even cleared up my skin well!

Don't worry too much, just take it on time and hope for the best.

Good luck!
