coughing = no sleep - December 21st 2010, 10:23 AM

Last night, i was literally in tears. I was soo tired, but everytime i nearly fell asleep i'd start coughing, proper racking coughing spells that last 5-10minutes.

Thing is... it's not my throat- i've used soothers, and hot drins and thats fine...

It's coming from my chest, a really dry ratlle that causes me to cough like crazy, it hurts and feels like its tearing when i cough.

Is there anything i can do to sooth the inside of my chest? I know that sounds stupid but i can't do anymore without sleep

Hi there,

I would recommend going to your doctors office. If it's troubling you when you are going to sleep it could be something like asthma, which you would get prescribed inhalers for.

I would suggest going to your doctors office if it gets any worse.

Get well soon!

Have you got any cough mixture? I know it tastes yucky - but it definitely does the trick!! You can get that from a pharmasist - just describe your cough and they can prescribe the right cough mixture for you. Alternatively - as Lex said, see a doctor, there could be an underlying issue like minor asthma affecting yoru cough.

The best thing to do for the time being though, is have at least 2 or 3 pillows - prop yourself up and make sure you don't get too hot! Have a bottle of water near by too - and maybe take something that will help to send you off to sleep? Even a couple of painkillers like paracetemol might help.

Hope this helps x

Thats right.
I got away with it all and I'm still alive.

As long as hot blood runs through my veins
I'm still alive.

Use some Vick's vapor rub (there is also a cream in case you can't stand the greasy stuff).

Take some NyQuil, it will help with the coughing and it will knock you out.

Prop yourself up when you sleep.

Is the coughing last more than a few days and/or gets pretty unbearable, go to a doctor. Might be something you'll need meds to get rid of.
