Back Injury - October 26th 2011, 04:38 PM

On Saturday I hurt the top left hand part of my back, and it felt like I pulled it (I was moving a bed around and bending over, I'm not supposed to because I'm having physio for my hypermobility and weak back muscles.. but the bed needed moving so...). And it was still hurting on Monday when I went to an all-night party. At about 3am yesterday I was hugging some chick and she tripped, causing me to to fall onto the corner of a boulder and her whole body weight pushed me into it (I hit my head pretty hard too). I then rolled onto the floor and screamed in pain. About 20 seconds after, a drunken lad pushed his way through the crowd and fell on me, causing me to scream in pain again. It took me a couple minuted to see straight again, and then a few more to get up. I went to sleep on a mattress and woke up in agony.
When I got home at 11am yesterday, I had my Mum look at it. There are small cuts and grazes, but the whole area on the left hand side of my body where it hit (near the bottom of my ribs where it hurt on Sat) had swollen, raised about a cm and the outer edges had cone green with bruising. I had a bath (which hurt like hell) and today it's starting to go purple. I can't lay on it, move my shoulder too much and I don't know if it has anything to do with banging my head, but I was really nauseous for several hours after and still get really dizzy from standing up or turning my head, but it's been over a day now so I'm guessing that's just me. (And if it means anything, I'd taken some alcohol with painkillers so it might've hurt more?). I'd just like to know what I should do to help with the pain, and if I should tell my orthopaedic about it. Thanks for reading!

See of doctor ASAP. They may refer you to a back specialist, or may deal with it in the office. If you've had a history of weak back muscles, and now sustained an injury you need help. If your back is buggered it will haunt you until you die. A weak back support makes everything hurt to move, and will handicap you. See a doctor in case this is serious.

You probably have a concusion too, which can cause brain damage if left untreated. Again, I would recomend medical attention.

Hey there Jade,

I'm so sorry to hear this, the pain sounds dreadful. I definitely think you need to get yourself to a doctor as soon as you can and perhaps get yourself checked out for concussion as well like Justin said just to be on the safe side, especially if you're having dizzy spells.

In the mean time to help ease the pain obviously try taking some painkillers. If you feel just one painkiller on its own isn't helpful then you can take ibuprofen and paracetamol together which may work better. You could also try a stronger OTC painkiller such as cocodamol. Another thing you could try is to get the cream painkillers like Deep Heat or Deep Freeze that soak through your skin so you can apply it straight to the area.

Heat packs or ice packs may also help to relieve the pain.

Take care and I hope this gets better soon.

LOL, as serious as this is, I cant help but laugh because of your signature with Voldy's dancing.

Anyway, if you touch the bottom rib area, does it hurt or is it hard to breath? The bottom-most ribs on each side of your body are referred to as, "floating ribs" and they're more common to breakage than the other ribs. If it hurts to breath, it may be broken, otherwise it may be bone bruise. It is something you should tell your orthopaedic because if the swelling is far from the ribs, then it's something he has to look at.

Get a x-ray of your chest to see if there's any breakage of the ribs and CAT scan to see if there's any concussion.

Balance is regulated by your vestibular system, which is based mostly in the inner ear, however, dizziness is a common symptom of concussions as well.

I can rip you off, and steal all your cash, suckerpunch you in the face, stand back and laugh. Leave you stranded as fast as a heart-attack.
