How Vital Are Your Organs?! - March 25th 2009, 07:04 PM

I guess this should go here.. since it isn't really a current event or debate and it deals with health.

Anyway! How Vital Are Your Organs?
Source: http://health.msn.com/health-topics/...4835&gt1=31036

I definitely found this pretty interesting. I always assumed you needed your intestines to live. I don't know why, but I did. The pancreas, I knew you could live without. I technically have my pancreas but it doesn't work so I don't use it anyway. The spleen is removed daily for tons of people and the stomach can be replaced with something else.
Thoughts?

You need your spleen! For your immune system, it creates antibodies I think.

No, you can live without your spleen if necessary. But it means your immune system is underr more pressure and more likely to develop infections.

Jeez! I never thought that would be possible! 6 organs??? Then again if you think about it there's always alternatives for them.

You are able to live without your spleen. Your liver will just have to work harder to provide the blood cells. The spleen is mainly used to store extra blood in the case that someone begins to hemorrhage, so it can begin to replenish the body.

The pancreas can be lived without, but most who have it removed become insulin dependent.

Medicine is able to replace alot of hormones and necessities the body has to have for most organs.

I'm pretty sure you can live without most of your organs. Their functions are necessary though, so you would need to have them replaced by something artificial to do those things or have regular injections of the chemicals certain organs make.

Whether or not you're actually living is different from surviving though. You would probably be comatose without a lot of your organs, and hooked up to some kind of machine all the time.

Searching my heart for its true sorrow,
This is the thing I find it to be:
That I am weary of words and people,
Sick of the city, wanting the sea;

Wanting the sticky, salty sweetness
Of the strong wind and shattered spray;
Wanting the loud sound and the soft sound
Of the big surf that breaks all day.

The vital organs are lungs, heart, brain, liver and to an extent, intestines. Then again, heart and lungs can be replaced by a machine, as could most of the functions of the intestines. The liver and brain could not have their functions replaced. You could live without parts of your skin, however, an entirely skinless person would be unable to survive.

You can live without a kidney, pancreas, spleen, probably thymus, probably components/entire GALT, etc... .

You could, technically, live without your brain. You really only need your brain stem. It just wouldn't be much of a life, being a vegetable and all. Then again, Mike the Headless Chicken got along fine:

If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life
that will live on in the memories of your loved ones."

Brain stem is part of the brain. Having no brain means having the entire thing, including brain stem taken out. Therefore, couldn't live.

I think it's clear I meant you don't need the main brain, just the brain stem.
