Sharp abdominal pain?? :/ - December 23rd 2011, 11:28 PM

I'm probably worrying over nothing, but on and off today I've been getting a sudden stabbing pain slightly to the left of my belly button (not sure whether that's upper or lower abdomen ) The pain isn't constant, I might get it and then not feel it again for anything from 20 mins to 2 hours, but when it happens it lasts about 5-6 seconds and it's sore. It feels closer to the surface and sharper than normal digestive/bowel related pain might be. It doesn't seem constant enough to really worry about, but it's kind of annoying. Any ideas on what it might be or how I can get rid of it?? :/

Actually it's more like 10 seconds than 5-6...

Well, the first thought that comes to mind is appendicitious. For that, you need to see a doctor immediately. But I'm not totally sure. If it gets worse at all, definitely go see your doctor, but maybe give them a call so they can tell you if you should get it checked out or not.

I thought of that, but it seems too far away to be appendicitus ~ it's more on the upper left of my stomach than the lower right, and also it's not a consistent pain, it comes and goes. I was just wondering if there were any other explanations...came away from google convinced I wouldn't survive the night!! Thanks though.x

You said- it's in line with your belly button?

Appendicitis pain can be felt on both sides. When it's on the left it's known as 'referred pain'. It's how mine started. Do you have a temp? Feel sick/been sick? Upset stomach?

It could be muscular. Been doing any heavy lifting? Can you feel a spot under the skin if it's in the same spot?

Could be a whole host of things.

If you have vomiting/diarrhea and a temp then go to the doctors straight away. If you have just the pain then take some painkillers and see if settles. If it continues then go to the doctors when they're next open. If the pain gets too much then go to the out of hours doctors.

Feel better soon x

Lottie is definitely right. If you are sick at all, then go to the doctors right away as it is likely Appendicitis. If you are just experiencing pain right now, it could be muscle pain.

Sometimes muscle spasm or get pulled. It can be a dull pain or severe excruciating pain. It could be from lifting heavy stuff, doing too much bending, sleeping wrong, etc.

And sometimes, you might not even know why you have muscle pains...they just happen.

Also, I don't know what this is, but I've had weird sharp pains in my side on occasion. I've been told it could be needing to go to the bathroom, but that usually never is the case for me. After a few hours or sometimes a day, it just goes away. Most likely something with the muscle, but nothing to worry about.

Re: Sharp abdominal pain?? :/ - December 24th 2011, 09:41 PM

Thanks guys. The weird thing is (I knew I'd feel silly about posting it the next day!!) after I posted this last night the pain got a lot more frequent and constant and was really sore...but I went to sleep and haven't felt it since then (about 20 hours ago??) I have been sick over the last few days but it was more a type of flu/bug sickness which didn't affect my stomach and seems unrelated. If I had been vomiting or experiencing diarrhoea with this I would have been on the phone to an ambulance straight away, don't worry!! (:
It really didn't feel to me like a muscle pain (at least the ones I've had before) but since I haven't been bothered at all by it since then, should I just let it go?? I feel a bit silly now as i hasn't come back!! Thanks so much for the replies though.x

If it doesn't return, I'd just let it go. It very well may have been just gas (which has been mistaken for a heart attack more than once!), mild irritation in some organ, or something muscular. If you experience the same pain again, you should definitely get checked (which I must say as a sufferer of Crohn's disease who was diagnosed after feeling unexplainable abdominal pain and went to the hospital with similar fears), but I wouldn't be too concerned about appendicitis or anything that requires absolutely immediate medical attention. Good luck!

I'd say let it go unless it happens again. If you have a doc appointment soon, you can mention it to them to see what they say, but I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I'm glad it went away!
