Just the question in the title. Thanks

If they didn't tell you NOT to, then you should. You could end up passing out when they take blood if you don't eat and have fluids.

It depends on what you're getting blood drawn for. If they tell you to fast, then don't eat. Otherwise, I suggest you eat because as mentioned above, you could pass out if you don't have enough hydration or good sugar levels.

Well, for the blood tests I've had, I'm suppose to fast. But that's after dinner, so I don't mind. We try to have my blood tests first thing in the morning so that afterwards I get to eat breakfast.

Well I'm glad I found this. I asked my mom and she said something about to fast or whatever. I looked it up online and people said to drink water before you get blood work done. I have to get blood work done this week, so I checked my papers and it didn't really say anything.

I've not known that I shouldn't have eaten before a blood test and got told off

Call them and see if you have to fast or not. If you do have to fast, then bring something sugary with you to take afterwards like Lucozade or chocolate. You'll definitely feel dizzy!

If it's just a normal blood test, I don't see any reason why you should fast? You should drink lots of water beforehand; it will keep you hydrated and I believe it makes it easier for them to find a vein.

Re: Do you have to eat before a blood test? - March 7th 2012, 01:27 PM

As some have mentioned, call and ask. Just say "Hey, I'm getting my blood drawn and I want to know if I'm allowed to eat before the test?"

Normally you should be able to, but there are CERTAIN tests that require you to fast. In this case, some can be fast for 12 hours (usually for surgery, but I've heard for blood tests too), others for 4 hours.

Definitely bring something sugary to eat before you leave, even if you are able to eat before the test. It's just to ensure you don't get too dizzy

It depends on what they're testing. Call and ask.

Most typically, a fasting (no eating) test is most accurate. But, before you assume anything, call..otherwise the test could be invalid.

I've had a lot of bloodwork done and countless different tests. I've never been told that I should or shouldn't eat before. I would say the most important thing is to be well hydrated before, and you might want to eat a little bit so that you don't pass out (I never have but some people might). I would also suggest eating afterward, perferably something with some sugar in it. My mom usually let me get a cookie or something after.

OHHH I'm a phlebotomist. AKA I draw blood. Drink plenty of water--preferably a bottle before you go to the appointment. Next, don't fast if they didn't tell you. Usually you would fast for a Glucose test, but obviously don't go out and eat McDonald's before the appt. Eat a regular meal, preferably an hour or more before you go. If you eat extremely fatty foods, it will show up in your tests and your blood will have lipid, which is fat in the blood.

Drinking the water will make your veins stand out more and would be less painful during the procedure.
