Infected cut? - April 1st 2009, 01:49 PM

Okay, so yesterday I was taking the metal screws of a wooden table with a rusted pair of pliers, the screws were stuck, and managed to cut my finger open. It's like a really bad, wide paper cut, but it's not healing over, it hurts like heal,I can't wear a band-aid on it because it hurts and is sore, and water is making it sting. I'm curious if it could be infected? And is there anything I can put on it to make it hurt less/ close the wound?

did you cut it on the screw or with the plyers. i would reccommend going to see a doctor and getting a tetnus shot, if your shots are not up to date. Also it wouldnt hurt to get it checked out to make sure that it isnt infected.

Hey!
If its a deep wound then, yeah it will hurt. I'd make an appointment with your doctor and in the mean time clean it as best as you can *yes this bit will hurt*, using an antiseptic wipe, then i'd put some antiseptic cream on it.

It would be best to get it checked out, it might be nothing but will at least put your mind at rest.

Casey,

As said above, if the object that cut you was rusty, I would make an appointment with your doctor ASAP to make sure everything is all right. In the mean time, try using Neosporin (which comes in a Pain Relief formula, by the way =]) or some other antiseptic cream, and dress it the best you can. It won't help if even more germs and such get into the cut! I know it will hurt, but it is important that you keep the wound as clean as possible until a doctor can check it out.

Take care, and feel better.

Casey,

Are you up to date on your tetanus shot? A common way for Tetanus to enter the body is through cuts by a rusty object. You can view more information on Tetanus as well as a list of the symptoms Here. You will definitely want to see a doctor right away regardless of wether it is Tetanus or possibly some other type of infection. General signs of infection include redness, swelling, pain and tenderness, increased warmth of the wound, puss formation, as well as fever and chills. You should clean it as soon as possible if you haven't already. I would recommend cleaning it with some hydrogen peroxide and then applying a Neosporin and then a bandaid to prevent dirt from entering the cut. I hope you feel better soon.

^^ I couldn't have said it better. You should definitely clean it [at least] twice a day and put Neosporin on it and then a bandaid. If it is red and swollen and warm to the touch it is most likely infected so you'll want to see a doctor as soon as you can.

Another option to close the cut is Neosporin liquid bandaid. I use it often on my fingers because it still allows you to move it, and it contains antiseptics and pain relief.
