Exclamation My friend drinks bleach - May 31st 2012, 09:33 PM

Jsyk, i don't know if im putting this in the right forum, but i don't know where else i should put this.

Anyway, a close friend of mine told me the other day that he drinks bleach. He doesn't drink enough that it would kill him, but he drinks small amounts of it a lot. Whenever he does this, he throws up as well.
He says it makes him feel sleepy, dizzy, neasous, and "tingly."

I don't know the long-term effects of doing this, but i know it can't be healthy. I'm worried sick about him.
So what should i do? Is there something i can do to help him stop? Is drinking bleach going to cause problems in the long run? Please help.

Hey Maggie,

I would honestly recommend talking to his parents. What he is doing can damage his organs, and all in all kill him. It's very important for you to tell an adult immediately. Yes, he might be mad at you and not want to talk to you. But it's better to have an angry friend than a sick or dying friend. Either by telling them yourself, or convincing him to do it, he can get the help he needs. Good luck, I hope that helps!

Problems in the long run would be multiple organ failure followed by death at a fairly young age. He's quite literally burning himself from the inside out. If you want to help him, try to find out why he does it. Tell his parents about it, ideally while he's present (assuming you're his best friend he'll know you told so no sense in hiding about it). Afterward, get him to a doctor to see what damage he's done. If he's been doing this for a long time, I imagine his oral health is the shits.

Most definitely get him to stop this addiction because with any it will get worse down the track, he may be drinking small amounts now which are relatively harmless, but when he gets to the point of drinking large amounts then some very serious health problems can occur. Long term affects from consuming large amounts or high concentrations of a Bleach Oxidizer can corrode the stomach, oesophagus and eventually cause cardiac arrest, coma's or death. Ingestion can also lead to mental issues.

Humans are able to drink around an ounce of bleach for every 25 lb. of body weight or so without showing any severe side affects other than the sort of discomfort you would expect from drinking acid. Doing this more than once however is extremely bad for you because the bleach will begin to dissolve your stomach lining, esophagus... Like Revolution said, I would tell his parents if I were you, or get him to stop 5 minutes ago (meaning as soon as you can).

I agree with Traci- telling his parents as soon as possible would be the best thing you can do for him. This could possibly be life threatening, and no matter how mad he is at you for telling, one day he'll more than likely thank you.

Re: My friend drinks bleach - June 2nd 2012, 04:21 PM

bleach can erode the skin! ive left it on my finger for a little while and it created a hole in my skin and got all tingly, now imagine what creating a hole in his liver/intestines/esophagus could do. You don't necessarily need the skin on your fingers to survive but you do need your internal organs. A "small amount" of bleach is going to add up everytime he does it. This reminds me of "My Strange Addiction," a show on TLC where this girl drinks gasoline. Crazy stuff :/
definitely convince him to tell his parents or find out his reasons behind doing this stuff and get him some counselling, or else he will die within the next couple years at most.

I thought you were joking, at first. Bleach is corrosive, it will literally melt his insides. The reason I thought you were kidding is because it kills you. I assumed he'd already be dead. This has to stop right goddamn now if he plans on living to next year. He's likely already done irrepairable damage to his insides.

damitbob: Not necesarily "fun" but ridiculously addictive.

Also, the effects of being high likely numb the pain when it's worst. However as he continues doing this the pain will be constant.

That extra mouthful could kill your friend! Talk to a trusted adult, this is highly dangerous and it will effect him in the near future. I had a friend who died from drinking something similar to bleach as it burnt her throat and mouth.

Please get help for your friend!

I agree with what everyone else is saying. I think your friend needs to get help now. Bleach has chemicals in it that is dangerous to his health and any amount could damage his body and his health could be in danger.
