One year sober. - July 18th 2009, 06:19 AM

Hey guys!

On the seventh of August, my dad will have been sober for one year. Which really, is an amazing accomplishment. After being an alcoholic and taking narcotics nearly all my life. Well, all my life except for this one year.

I really want to do something special for him. I'm not loaded on money really, and I am a person who likes more homemade stuff rather than buying an expensive thing. I'm not sure what kind of.. what would constitute as a one year sober presentish type thing.

Any ideas of things to do? I want what it is to show how special it is to me that he's sober now, so I don't want like, to make dinner or something like that that you could do for a birthday too, if that makes sense.

Thanks!
Maria.

Maria!

That's wonderful. [: I'm so happy for you, and I hope that this has been the best year so far for you guys and your relationship, even if it probably has been one of the hardest for him. [I can't believe I've known you for over a year, but I remember hearing stories of before the sobriety, and I know this is much better]. Get ready for me to sound like the cheesiest person ever, but I really think you should gather some pictures of some things your family did this year, or some tickets of movies/concerts/parks you went to, or just whatever - something to represent each month of this past year, and on each page, perhaps you could write how much you appreciated him for staying sober and how great it was for your family, highlighting all the cool stuff you did that year? I sound laaame, but I know I'd really appreciate if someone were to make a booklet type thing for me. Haha. Hmm.

I hope you think of something. And another squeeeee from me for your dad. [:

Maria,

Congratulations. You and your father have come far and it's something really great - for the both of you, to be celebrating this. I'm sure anything you do for your father would be special to him and only further motivate him to keep going. I was thinking you could buy a nice frame for him, they aren't too expensive (depending on what you pick). And then you can easily print off something that looks like an award certificate, maybe you can even bring that into a local specialty printing shop to make it look more professional. They can probably add the puffy letters that you can feel on the page, sorry I don't know what to call them. Anyway, and then you can put that in the frame to present to your father the day he has reached sobriety for one year. That way, he'll always have something to remember the day he started and reached one year free of substances. It wouldn't be too expensive and it's something he would be able to always keep.

I really hope you can find something to give your father that is special to him and yourself. Don't be afraid to be mushy, this is an important day and you both should cherish it. I'm so happy for you both and I hope things only get better from here on out. If you need anything, let me know okay? And congrats once more. :]

Have hope,
-Melissa

Fantastic! What does your dad like? Is he into any particular sports or interests? Something that taps into that might be a good idea.

Dammit!! I was going to suggest making him a cake...until i saw your last line still though, that's really great Maria congratualtions to your dad. I think Melissa's idea was really good, it's personal and still shows you wanted to make an effort.
good luck.

Melissa, that is a brilliant idea. I'm going to do that. Does anyone have any ideas as to where I could get an official looking certificate made?

I'll probably bake a cake too though.

You can google like "free online certificate creator" and get a whole bunch of sites to print out a certificate that you can design.. Idk if that will work for ya, but that's an option. :P

Stores like Staples have a departments that can professionally do posters and such, I'm sure you could get something done there?
