First NA meeting? - March 13th 2010, 06:02 PM

I decided I'm going to check out a NA meeting and see if it's for me. I don't want to do rehab, so I'm thinking this could be an option.

I was going to talk to this one social worker at my school on Monday about it and to get more info, as I believe there's one on Tuesday where I live.

I know I need it. I got way too far into the drugs and I need them to feel normal at this point. They're taking my paycheck and my life. /:
But I'm hella nervous about going. Maybe because I'm only sixteen. Maybe because I hate admitting my problem. /: I finally told my friend Brandon that I need to stop and that they control me; I'm addicted.

Have any of you been to an NA meeting?
What was it like?
What should I expect?

Re: First NA meeting? - March 15th 2010, 05:11 PM

I've never been to a NA meeting but I am studying to be an addictions counselor and we do get trained to lead these sort of meetings. Currently, in Canada at least, the majority of people attending NA meetings are under the age of 25, so it's more than likely that you won't be the only person in your age range at the meeting. It can be an overwhelming experience at first, especially if you are going alone but many people find that once they get introduced and hear others stories that there is a sense of community and it becomes a lot more comfortable. No one will force you to speak up your first meeting there if you don't want to, which is always something people worry about. NA meetings will provide you with a lot of support, which is what you need when you're trying to become sober, I think it will be great for you.

Remember you are valuable
Remember you are repairable
Remember you matter
Remember they don't."
