Worried about dads health... - August 4th 2013, 12:26 AM

How do you all deal with worrying about your parents health? My parents are getting to "that age" (over 50) where people start having health issues. Because my dad is overweight and has a few minor health issues I worry what might happen to him. I know it's normal to have to someday worry about your parents but i'm not ready to deal with him dying yet. But I worry about him. How do you all deal with that?

It's a very hard thing to deal with. My father is 60 - and has moderate to severe health issues; and he still works full time in a factory. You know, I struggled with the same thing for about a year when his health problems became worse - but I talked to him about it. I communicated my worries, and him talking to me actually made me feel alot better. I mean, I wouldn't know what to do without him, however, I try not to think about it.

Anyone could die at any time, but I'd like to think of my dad as a fighter, and that he won't 'go home' until he feels ready too. Once in awhile I'll worry about him, but majority of the time I know he will take care of himself, take his meds, and live the healthiest life he can.

There isn't any special formula I can give you to stop you from worrying about him, but maybe a simple conversation with him, will go a long way. Other then that, just have alittle faith that everything will be ok.

Best wishes,
Chris

This is always a tough thing to deal with. As an only child of aging (61 and 62), divorced parents who live 3000 miles apart, it's something I have to think about. My mom has had some minor health issues over the years, but so far is doing okay and my dad's family history scares me to death (for both him and myself). If you feel comfortable talking to him about it then that's probably the best way to go. It might also help to lead by example or offer to get healthier with him.

No one wants to deal with the loss of their parents, I wish I had better advice for you about that, but it's still something I'm trying to figure out.

I have been getting healthier. Because I myself have a bit of a weight problem. I work out and eat super healthy most of the time.... But my dad eats SO MUCH all the time and while he leads a some what active life style (walks a lot) it still worries me, especially given how my grandma went down. I just worry if I try finding a way to bring it up then he'll just blow me off and not take me seriously.... or worse, he might actually just get offended. Cause its not like he eats shit or anything (it's healthy food usually), buuuut he does have a weight problem. So yeah... I'm glad other people can relate though
