My dad is an agro who treats my mother like dirt. - February 19th 2016, 03:29 PM

Okay, so this is my first post on this, but I need to express the absolute anger and disgust I feel at how my dad behaves towards my mam, and everyone else in the family, but mostly my mam.
He is constantly belittling her, and nothing she does is right. She recently lost her job and when printing something out on the computer, she noticed that word had coming up. Of course, when she told dad this, he went mad saying how she'd broken the computer and how stupid she was. This upset me and i started asking him what was wrong, it turned out that word didn't have clipart, CLIPART! I tried to talk him around to how ridiculous he was acting but he just wouldn't listen to reason.
That's not even the worst though, I've seen him blame my mam for the oven, which is nearly ten years old, breaking, as well as throw a fit when she closed the fridge door harder than he would have liked. These are only recent examples though, he's been like this for as long as i can remember, and I'm so fed up with putting up with him. No one can even bring anything up with him about something not working because we're afraid of how he'll react! He never admits when he's wrong, treats us all like idiots, but is paranoid of any of us thinking he's one. We shouldn't have to live in fear of him, he's my dad!

Hey there,

If your dad doesn't want to change there isn't much that you can do to change him. People have to want to change, you know? It is unfortunate that you all have to live in fear of him exploding. Have you found any coping skills to deal with his outbursts of anger? It might help to avoid him as much as possible. I know you shouldn't have to live that way but if you can stay out of his way then you might have less encounters with him.

As for the way he treats your mom, I think she could use some support from you. Let her know how much you value her, do some chores around the house to lighten stress she might be feeling and do other things to show her she is valued. While she might not get compassion or love from your dad I am sure it would mean a lot if she got that support from you.

I hope that this helped and I am wishing you the best of luck.
