Are you scared of your mother? - May 21st 2009, 06:29 PM

My Mother is so strict. Wasnt allowed ear piercings till I was about 8. Im 23 & too scared to get another tattoo & piercing, she'd go mad.

Wasnt allowed to dress myself til about 6,

Wasnt allowed to dye my hair

It wasnt untill 16 when I finally stuck my 2 fingers up & did what I like...but secretly Im so scared of my mum!

Not really. I don't live with her and she's over 3400 miles away. She was strict, but I wasn't so much scared of her as I was her husband.

Me and my mother do not get along at all. I cannot stand her, or my father for that matter. My mother is not happy unless she is fighting. Excuse my language, but my mother is just a bitch. She always tries to start fights with anyone around her and... yes, I guess you can say I'm not scared of my mother.(:

I'm not scared of my mom. I'm more scared of my Dad, even though he's a softy. If my mom tells me to do something and I don't do it, then I know that nothing is going to happen.

If you're living on your own and you're 23, then you shouldn't care what your mom thinks.

I couldn't get my ears pierced until I was 12, but I didn't want to until I was 13.

I used to be scared of my parents until I got social services involved. This gave me back my self respect and enabled me control.

Yeah, if I'm being honest, I'm pretty scared of my mother as well. I can't talk to her about anything because I'm scared she'll freak, even if it's something small.

Nah, she doesn't usually disagree with anything i do anyway. She knows she has no REAL power over me anymore. She will tell me she disaproves of something but she can't actually stop me.

She understands now that I've grown up and that I'm mature and responsible enough to make my own decisions.

I love my mother for being understanding.

As for my father? Oh that's a different story. He's a control freak who thinks I'm still about 11. But i try my best to make sure he has no involvement in my life. Which can prove difficult sometimes considering he lives with me and is one of my sources of money.

Thanks for putting up with me <.<

Nope, not at all. She's extremely strict about some things, and she has her rules and principles and expectations for my behavior, but I think most of them are fair and reasonable. She's a good mom. I've turned out just fine and probably better than I would have if she was extremely lax about things. I may not like some of her rules, but she takes care of me and I live in her house, so I learn to deal with it.

The only time I'm scared of her is when I know I've done something stupid.

I'm not scared of her so much as just constantly pissed at her. She doesn't see how much she hurts other people (and herself) with her erratic behavior. She sounds like a demon has possessed her when she's angry, and the only thing I can do is try not to break when she provokes me. I can't tell you how much I don't want to be like her.

this thread made me LOL.
and to be honest, I didn't really
developed any relationship with my mother
until I was 15 and from time to time
I would call her for advice because I moved out this
year and i live about 20 minutes from her so I love
my mom and you know I can understand how you feel
about your mom, but you know typical parents, they
just always want what best for their kids. [:

I'm not really scared of my mom, but she knows how to annoy me to no end after I do something she doesn't want me to do, so I rarely do anything she would not approve of... I'm actually more nervous about what the other people in my family will think of me if I were to ever do something they didn't exactly appreciate.

Scared is probably the wrong word. It's very complicated.
I love her very, very much. But most of the bad stuff I've gone through in my life has happened because she was afraid or worried for me. She has also got a very strong opinion of how things ought to be and I don't quite fit into her world view.
I'm not scared of her, I'm scared of disappointing her, or hurting her.

Wow, seems like both have strict moms :P

My mother is strict too. I wasn't allowed to have an extra ear piercing so I went out behind her back and had it done. Months later, she found out about it and got REALLYY mad. On January this year, she knew I had a boyfriend behind her back too which makes me grounded till now :P She changed my cellphone number and she doesn't let me go out with my friends anymore *she thinks they're a bad influence to me* but I still managed to go out and meet up my boyfriend at least once a week.

Anyway, bottom line is... Yes, I am scared of her. The only reason why I'm scared of her is because I'm scared that once she knows I'm having a boyfriend behind her back again, she might take all the things where I can communicate with him. I cant risk that. I love my boyfriend so much. I cant even bare thinking about that happening...

Also, at the first post, waiting till 8 doesn't seem to strict for ear piercings, though I see your point about dressing yourself and dyeing your hair.

God, yes. She's crazy... I never know what mood I will find her in, or what she'll do to me or make me do. She's constantly yelling about the smallest things, and often gets physical. Once she threw all of her shoes at me!

But she's my mom, so I guess I love her.

there used to be some issues with my mum as my dads very controlling and i was just like its my life i'll live it my way and you can either suck it up or go jump and they didnt really like that so i moved out and now im in control of everything and my mum and i are more like friends now but she still takes good care of me like always but we get along much better cause theres no longer a fight for power or control.

it was never like the things described in other posts like piercings and stuff cause i could do all that always if i wanted and she'd just think i was an idiot but it was more like control in terms of u live in my house follow my rules kind of thing which basically consisted of do what i say and dont argue with me.
i never really was one for following the rules...

but i dont really understand why your scared of your mums the sooner you stand up for what you want and need the sooner she'll respect your decisions and the key is dont take no for an answer it definately wont be easy it was a 5yr long fight with my parents before i moved out but now my mum is a totally different person to before shes exactly who i always wanted her to be now and i think i helped make that happen and i love her more than anything

so just take a stand for what you want and dont take no for an answer
is it your life or hers?

Re: Are you scared of your mother? - June 12th 2009, 12:12 AM

I used to be so scared of my mommy, but now I can understand her reasoning for things so things aren't as rough. Partly because I can expect reactions, partly because I can change reactions with how I word certain things because I know what works on her

My dad on the other hand.. lets just say I don't live with him anymore for a reason.

Re: Are you scared of your mother? - June 12th 2009, 02:50 AM

I wasn't scared of my mom until I was around 12 years old. When my parents split up, I was allowed to talk to an attorney and state which parent I wanted to live with. I said I wanted to live with my dad. I ended up getting stuck with my mom. I think she found this out, somehow, and held it against me for years afterward.

I would be simply PARALYZED with fear whenever she started yelling at me (which was every day), up until it got physical. We were in the car, and I refused to look at her. She punched me in the arm. So, I punched her right back in the arm, and locked eyes with her. She was so shocked, and I could see it in her eyes, that it helped me stand up for myself more often. Slowly but surely, I gained more independence, until finally, when I turned 18, I moved out to live with my dad.

It's been two years, and our relationship is still rocky... but we are slowly beginning to have a "friendship". I can't really call her a "mother"... she gave birth to me, but at some point in my life, she lost that title. I do think she wants to earn it back, though, which in turns make me want to take what she says to heart more often.

Well my parents didn't let me get my ears pierced untill I was 10, I didn't see my first PG-13 movie until I was 12, it was Ever After. I wasn't allowed to go anywhere with my friends without an adult until I was 16. I only got a cell phone at 14 (almost 15) because I was going out of town for competition and they wanted me to call every 5 minutes. Clothing wise they are always with me and pretty much pick everything out but I don't mind because they always find good things and stuff I like. But I wouldn't call my parents strict just over protective which is more of what your mother sounds like.
