Does my mom favor my sister? - August 13th 2017, 07:14 AM

We are 4 years apart.
My parents divorced when I was 2. My mom remarried to my stepdad, Jake, and 2 years later, they had a baby girl, my sister. I am 13 now, and my sister Amara is 8, almost 9.
Since Amara was born, I feel my mom favors her. Also, Jake doesn't like me very much, and obviously favors Amara.
1. This happened recently. My sister was being driven to the mall with some money so she could buy an iPad. I just tagged along, although it was made clear that I was not allowed to buy anything. Anyway Jake told Amara that he and my mom were going to pick her up in 10 mins to get her a burger and fries and as for me, I was going to walk home and I wouldn't get a Burger or dessert and I had to clean the kitchen for the rest of the evening.
2. Amara's room has two huge beds, a hot tub, a walk in closet, her own bathroom, and a TV. My room is smaller with a small bed and a teeny closet space.
3. My sister is quiet and artistic at school. I'm a socialite and I'm a huge fan of the popular girls. We both get good grades, but Mom and Jake praise hers and not mine.
4. When she gets in trouble, mom just says "Don't do that sweetie". When I do, I get grounded for like 2 weeks and I get my phone taken away.
5. She gets whatever she wants. I don't.
6. I always get a used pencil on my birthday, and a ketchup packet on Christmas. She gets a TON of expensive gifts.

Hi Penny, Welcome to TeenHelp.

Through what you've written it does sound like your mom and your step-dad favor your sister, especially when you had to walk home from the mall and clean the kitchen all night and your sister got a meal and got to be driven home in the car. The same can be said for your sister getting expensive gifts on her birthday, and you only receive a used pencil or a ketchup packet.

Some of the behaviors you have written about seem like emotional abuse or neglect. It certainly is not about material items in the grand scheme of things because they do not buy happiness and love, but it is unfair for you to be treated so differently from your sister.

Have you ever talked to someone about how you're feeling? Maybe you can speak to a friend, or someone at school like a teacher or counselor so you can get some additional support.

Alright, thank you so much!
I will try that. I really think the world needs more helpful and caring people like you.
