Unhappy My best friend - April 19th 2019, 07:28 PM

Okay so last week, we had this assignment in one of our classes where the teacher would say a word and we would have to write down stuff. So for example he said "happy", and we would have to write down a happy moment. So anyway, my friend and I have two desks next to each other, so we saw what each other wrote. My friend wrote down some really sad stuff. She said that the worst thing she ever did was be born, what she wants to do is die, she doesn't believe in happiness, etc. We had to read them out, and she said different things than what she wrote down. She said that she did that because she didn't want the teacher to send her to the counselor. But later on, when I asked her why she wrote all the depressing stuff, she said she just did it to annoy that teacher. So these two things contradict each other, kind of. I am worried abot my friend. What to do?

You're friend might have really been doing that as a cry for help. Maybe she just did to annoy him, but honestly, teachers are amongst the professionals who have a duty to report this kind of thing, at least where I live, so it seems weird that she did this to "annoy" him -- scare him, maybe, but if she's in therapy, surely she knows that this might lead to increase psychiatric evaluation for her own safety?

It might be that something is genuinely wrong and this is her weird way to put it out there and see if she'll be take seriously but she might not be ready to face those awful and dark feelings in a genuine and vulnerable way with you.

If you're worried about the friend and feel comfortable talking to this teacher, I'd recommend reaching out to them or a guidance counsellor at the school. She might be mad but it's for her own safety

Okay, thank you. I should clarify that she's not actually IN therapy, just she didn't want the teacher to send her to therapy, which is why she read different answers out loud.
Thanks for your help! I will try that.
