My family doesnít take my health seriously - May 11th 2019, 07:52 AM

Hi everyone,

I have severe psoriasis all over my body it comes and goes suddenly Iím always made fun about it, calling my ugly and other names it makes me extremely insecure. Also I have these headaches that make me loose my vision Iím taking medication for, they tell me Iím overreacting and the headaches only stress Iím seeing a doctor for everything. They get upset when I need to go to hospital often, the cost of healthcare isnít a problem. Itís only that they think Iím faking it because they donít pay attention to me a lot.

Any idea how I could make this situation seem less bad?

Hey there (and welcome to TeenHelp!)

I'm sorry to hear that you have severe psoriasis and headaches and yet your family doesn't take your health concerns seriously. It's hard enough going through these things as it is and you definitely don't deserve to be made fun or or invalidated for the things that you experience.

Is it possible to let your doctors and other health professionals explain your health concerns to your family? It can help for family to hear professional opinions as they may realise that you aren't doing it for attention. Alternatively, you can always show them information from the internet about your psoriasis and headaches so that they can understand the severity and that you have to treat these health concerns properly.

Do you spend much quality time with your family? If you don't, then it's understandable that your family would think that repeatedly going to the doctors and hospitals is for attention (even though you aren't doing it for attention at all!). Is it possible to perhaps try to spend more quality time with your family, perhaps one evening a week you can do something together- watch a film, play a game, cook together or go for a meal out etc. By strengthening the relationship you have with your family they may come to realise that your health conditions are legitimate and it's not about trying to get attention at all.

Unfortunately, some families may not be so understanding and may seem to be stuck in denial no matter what. Do you have other people in your life that you trust and can talk to? When families don't validate your feelings, it can seem pretty disheartening and isolating. Having other people in your life can act as a support system against the hurtful things you are told.
