Unhappy imaginary friends. - July 3rd 2009, 08:50 PM

How old is too old for imaginary friends?

I wouldn't say there is an age. If you want imaginary friends then go for it. Although others may disagree.

I guess it depends on each individual. If you want imaginary friends then go for it, no one has the right to criticise you for something so personal to you. I guess if having imaginary friends makes you happier than i don't see why you should try to "stop" having them around.

Hi Kayla,

As long as having imaginary friends does not stop you from socializing with people and having real friends as well, then you can have imaginary friends as long as you like. Some people may think it is a little strange, but really it is up to you and what you like.

Socializing with other people is still important, so keep that in mind. Imaginary friends are not harmful unless they keep you from others.

Take care.

Nat.

Is it really? If your ultimate goal is to be happy, and having imaginary friends makes you the happiest you can be, why not do it?

So, I had some guy message me about me being a hypocrite because I believe in God?

I don't ride my bike and pretend there's a person that I made up riding beside me. I don't think It's mentally healthy to have imaginary friends past the age of childhood. Can any of you honestly tell me that If you were a junior in high school, and you had a friend that talked to an "imaginary" person, you would think they were 100% okay.

Is being mentally unhealthy a bad thing if you aren't harming other people and are genuinely happy? I wouldn't think it's normal, but I wouldn't force them to give up their 'friends'.

I had an imaginary friend when I was like ten or eleven, but only because my older sister, and even older best friend had one. So, I say it's honestly up to you. If you want an imaginary friend, go for it. Just don't let having one keep you from enjoying life.

Yes, It's not good for the mentally unhealthy person. I don't think anyone wants to be mentally ill, unless they are mentally ill There are mental hospitals that help people that don't harm people, but they are harming themselves.

There's not a damn thing wrong with having imaginary friends. If someone can believe in God, someone else can have kick ass friends that are spawned from your mind. Ignore the uncreative people.

I really don't know I mean if you go around talking to some imaginary person in public that probably isn't the best idea but if you keep it out of public eye I guess it's not that bad.

I also agree that it shouldn't get in the way of you socializing with real people because imaginary friends could be a defense mechanism; a way of avoiding people and never really meeting people which isn't a good thing.

If people can talk to themselves, why can't you have someone to talk with? There is no age limit, it's your life. I mean, sometimes you get lonely and need someone to talk to or just are bored. Whatever makes you happy. Don't listen to people who say it's weird, everyone has something that classifies them as being "weird." or whatever.

When you fall, don't always expect someone to pick you up. Do it yourself, you're stronger then you think. Brush yourself off and keep your head high.

I agree with strider. They are fine, and more people than you would expect actually have them...
I do, kind of. I dont think of them as imaginary friends though.. its more of a world that I escape too. Which is why I agree with strider, imaginary friends are fine if you dont let them get in the way of your life. I some times do..
And I have to disagree with you double x, usually (*usually when people have imaginary worlds or friends its because they are unhappy about something in their life or are bored with their life and they want to escape. So, although they make you happy at the time, it can make your life a lot worse in the long run and you can end up unhappier.. and then it becomes a cycle.. I can say that from experience... but like I said, thats only if you let them get in the way of your real life.

There's a diffrence between being creative and talking to people that don't exsist when your'e an adult...
I mean, as long as it doesn't harm anyone idc.
But no, i don't think it's the heathiest thing in the world.

But does that make you mentally ill?
Because you know it's Imaginary..you know it's not real.
So your'e not crazy? You'd be crazy if you beleived it was actually real?
Idk anything about this, so don't hate... was just a thought!

Re: imaginary friends. - July 11th 2009, 07:09 AM

I personally wouldn't go as far as saying that I'd have an imaginary friend past about 10 or so, but i'm all for using ones imagination to it's full extent so long as it doesn't interfere with your social life, so in the end I guess I'd have nothing against those who do.
