what do i do? - September 12th 2009, 07:14 PM

i'm not sure if this goes here, so feel free to move it if it doesn't belong.

Okay, so as many of you know, i wrote a story that is over 70 pages and we're going to try and get it published. that's going well, so i have no complaints about that.

well, i got bored like a week and a half ago, and started another story. i finished it today, it's 12 pages long, and i'm really proud of it, it's probably the best thing i've ever written. no problem, right? wrong. see, the problem is that my story is rather, really really inappropriate (well, it's not too bad but Mom wise? it's definitly a no-no). i love my story, and i really want to show it to my mom so she can appriciate it too, but i'm really afraid of how she'll react, since the story involves sex and french kissing and just a ltitle bit of nudity (nothing really graphis though). so, should i show it to my mom, or keep it a secret? thanx guys.

Hi there,

It does sound like you're in a tricky situation. I think it's great that you wrote a story you are so proud of and you want to share it with others, but I understand your worries about showing it to your mom to read.

I think you should really consider how your mom will react to your story and why she would react that way. If you think she will react negatively, then think about why she will react negatively. Is it because of what she believes? Is it because she doesn't know that you know this much about 'mature' subjects? After thinking about this, you should probably talk to your mom. You really need to communicate with her how you feel about this kind of thing and why it is a crucial part of your story (perhaps it strengthens the relationship of your characters, or it is used artistically).

Part of showing someone a piece you wrote is also taking the consequences of showing it. I think that if you are proud of your piece, then you should be able to show it and continue to be proud of it, despite what others may think. So, if you want to show it to your mom, then go right ahead, but make sure you have a discussion with her afterward if she is concerned.

It sounds like you put in a lot of work into this story, and I think that is great. Keep up your writing, and don't let what anyone may think get in the way of what you write.

Take care.

The great artists of our time are the ones who created something timeless. But it was never them defining it that way.
Everyone has a story. What's yours?
