Ughh My mom never believes me! - September 28th 2009, 10:26 PM

It's not like I have a history of lying to her or anything. But I sprained my foot over the summer and I don't think it ever fully healed. It was always sore after dancing but nothing a little ice couldn't fix. I had a really long rehearsal yesterday and I iced it afterwards but it still hurt. Now it hurts REALLY badly and my mom says take some pain meds and deal. Pain meds don't heal anything though they just make it stop hurting!!!! I'm so upset right now because she never believes me. She thinks since I've been out partying all weekend (I spent the night at a friend's house where we sat around all night and then went to a rehearsal which is where it started to hurt...) and now it "all of a sudden" hurts then I'm lying to get out of something.

It hurts sooo badly though. She won't take me to the doctor, she doesn't think it's that big of a deal. If this gets worse I may never be able to dance again. What do I do?? How do I get her to believe that this is serious???? I'm sooooo frustrated!!!

Hi there,

I agree that going to the school nurse would be a good idea. You could get them to check out your foot, and probably even write a letter to your mom explaining that something is actually wrong and it is hurting you and that going to the doctor would be the best idea.

At the same time, keep bringing this up to your mom. Try to explain your concerns about not being able to do dance, and that it would be worth going to the doctor and check up on it. If you feel you need to go to the doctor, then it must be a really serious pain and your worry is big enough to know that you aren't faking it. Do your best to convince your mom. If you can't, then ask the nurse for a letter.

Also, if your dance instructor notices that there is something wrong, maybe they would be able to talk to your mom and ask her to let you get it checked out?

I hope you feel better soon!

Nat.

What a way to over dramatize... And she has the right idea about the pain killers, seriously. You just need to stop dancing for a while, until it's completely healed, so really, you've brought it upon yourself. Trust me, I dance, and what I do most undoubtedly puts more strain on my legs and ankles then yours, and after a weekend of dancing they can really really hurt, but I wait, and it stops eventually.

And strenuous activity puts strain on your body, and your body needs time to recover from it, and if it doesn't it just keeps getting worse and worse and worse. Seriously, sit back and give it time to heal.

Thanks for the help guys.

..all except PolkaDot.. >.>

I went to the school nurse and my dance instructor at school and they gave me a note. I showed it to my mom and I have a doctor's appointment for tomorrow! (:

@PolkaDot: Firstly, if you don't have advice to give me, don't comment. Secondly, if I was putting strain on any part it'd be mostly my right foot. This time it's my left. Thirdly, I know a girl who did EXACTLY what I did and now she'll never be able to dance again. So I know what I'm talking about. If you want to just give me attitude, go somewhere else. Trust me it's the absolute LAST thing I need.

I do believe that I did actually give you advice... And what? A girl dancing on a bad ankle can now never dance again? It's much more likely that she has underlying problems. And you may think it's most likely to be your right ankle, but you're still on your left ankle, unless you just hop around, so you're still putting pressure on your left ankle, and your left ankle is probably weaker then your left ankle.

It's not even my ankle. It's my foot. As it turns out it's a really important muscle in my foot and I'm not even allowed to walk on it for the next 10 days.

And yeah she strained the same muscle I did and can't dance again cause she made it so bad.

It's not a bad ankle, it's a ruined muscle. =/

Next time please read what I say before saying I didn't give any advice, I would really appreciate it.
