Unhappy screwed up family - October 17th 2009, 02:13 PM

Today was probably one of the stupidest days of my life.

I asked my mom if I could go for a sleepover a my friends house, and it's all going to be just girls so it should be quite safe.

Anyway, she went completely mental and started saying how people don't care about her schedule and stuff.

I know that she wanted to go overseas with me and my dad this weekend, but as she hadn't planned anything as yet it isn't definite. Just as my sleepover plans aren't as well.

Anyway, she goes mental, and starts to argue with my dad, who by the way is also mental, and shouts back at her. They argue like crazy and she slams doors and stuff and he tells her to shut up.

And basically what I think they both need therapy cause I cannot life with this kind of shouting and screaming going on every week. My mom has been diagnosed with depression but she refuses to take the medication.

Also, because of this I keep intruding on my friends' lives by going to their place and always asking for their help.

I think my parents problems are starting to rub off onto me as well, because I am currently having a lot of social problems.

Any advice or suggestions on what to do would be welcome.

Hi there,

It sounds like things are really rough at home right now. It's really awful when parents get stressed out and fight over the dumbest things, but it does happen. It could be that stress at work or around other people could be causing your parents to get this angry. Maybe they don't have any other way to relieve their emotional stress other than yelling. It might benefit your parents to do an activity to help them relieve their stress. They could go for walks, go to the gym, or take a class to help them calm down.

I think counseling would probably be a good idea. It sounds like your parents might need it, and I think you would benefit from talking to someone as well if it is affecting you this much. Going as a family could be a good idea instead of seeing people separately. And if you go as a family, you could try to work things out together and talk to each other with a mediator present. That might help stop the yelling.

Try bringing up the idea of family counseling when your parents seem to be in a calmer mood. Let them know that you don't like it when everyone argues so much and you would really like to talk things through with them.

If you ever need to talk, feel free to message me any time.

Take care and all the best.
